Trout biting at Pardee
Trout are on a very good bite at Pardee right now although you only have until Oct. 25 before it closes to all camping and fishing until Feb. 3 of 2010.
The fish are biting very well on bait by the buoy line at the spillway and south cove. Berkley power eggs, red worms and nightcrawlers are all very good bait at this time. Try to fish in about 40 feet of water and keep your bait just off the bottom.
For the trollers, go as slow as you can and use worm wigglers or crawlers behind a small dodger in the same area.
In the Delta, the Rio Vista Bass Derby is this weekend and the weather looks like it will be very good. The striped bass fishing is still a little slow although fish are being caught both trolling and bait fishing. Most are being caught in the Sacramento River and are on the small side although we had fish to about 12 pounds brought into the Central Valley Anglers Derby this past weekend.
Wind was the biggest problem for those in the derby. Kenji Nakagawa won the $400 prize for first place with a 35-inch fish.
Smallmouth bass fishing in the old Sacramento River is hot with a lot of small fish and good numbers of 14- to 17-inch fish using crawdad crank baits. (both red and green).
At Caples Lake, trout fishing both from the shore line and trolling are good. The bank fishermen are doing well using crawlers, PowerBait and throwing spoons. Trollers are doing well with spoons on the surface and down to about 10 feet.
At Camanche, trout fishing is still a little slow although some large catfish have been taken lately to over 15 pounds. Good luck and good fishing.
