Liberty Ranch High School teacher Donna Hartje honored as 2010 Teacher of the Year
Liberty Ranch High School teacher Donna Hartje was recently recognized as the 2010 Teacher of the Year for Galt Joint Union High School District.
The honor allowed her to compete for the countywide Teacher of the Year title, although two other educators were chosen for that designation last month.
Hartje, who has been with the district for 10 years, currently teaches Algebra I and geometry. She was the only teacher chosen from Galt.
Liberty Ranch Principal Brian Deis worked with Hartje when he was at Galt High School, as well as the past year preparing to open the new high school.
"She is a leader on our campus, in the classroom and out," he said. "It was an honor to be on the stage with her during the awards dinner. We are so excited and proud to have her as part of our family."
After the nominations were received by the Sacramento County Office of Education, a community selection committee comprised of education professionals, including previous Teachers of the Year, met to interview each local district Teacher of the Year and selected the two finalists.
All 15 Sacramento-area teachers who received the title, including Hartje, will be honored when the Sacramento Kings host the Phoenix Suns on Feb. 5.
The Sacramento River Cats will also host a special Teacher Appreciation Night on May 3.
All of the school districts within the County of Sacramento, along with the Sacramento County Office of Education, are invited each year to participate in the Sacramento County Teachers of the Year Program. Larger districts are eligible to submit two entries.
This year, 11 local districts including the Sacramento County Office of Education participated.
Each district's Teacher of the Year completed a comprehensive application packet, which included an extensive biography and answering questions ranging from personal philosophy of teaching to an understanding of current educational issues.

Deliberate or not, it's very misleading! "

A teacher at a brand new school, that's been there for ONE MONTH, has been elected for teacher of the year for 2010. Does it matter that we're only in the first month of the 2010 school year?
""She is a leader on our campus, in the classroom and out," he said." FOR A MONTH? The school is ONE MONTH OLD! If anything shouldn't she have earned this award for what she did LAST YEAR at GHS?
Another biased move with promoting LRHS over GHS. When will this stop? "
