Woodbridge names Jim Severi as postmaster
Jim Severi, a 25-year veteran of the United States Postal Service, was installed as Woodbridge's postmaster on Friday and received a standing ovation upon his swearing in.
Severi took his position during a gathering of family and colleagues at the Woodbridge Post Office on E. Augusta Street.
"He's an all-around good guy," said post office regular Doug Chaney.
He said Severi is always helping his co-workers and has a great personality. He said he has known Severi for more than a year and speaks with him whenever he picks up mail from his P.O. Box and sees him. Chaney said he was very pleased that Severi earned the promotion.
Family and former coworkers showered Severi with praise as well.
"He's a master of his craft," said Tracy Postmaster Margaret Klein.
Klein told the audience of a story of when she was home in bed and received a call from postal inspectors telling her the Tracy office had not been locked up for the night. She said the reason was because Severi was still working late into the night.
"He's genuine," Klein said. "He's a gentleman. He treats his employees like family."
Klein's assessment of Severi would ring true throughout the ceremony as the new postmaster reflected his achievement onto his fellow coworkers and friends.
"He doesn't like to be the center of attention," said Jim's son, Greg Severi. He said that his dad likes for everyone to know that the people around him work hard like he does, and wants them to get their deserved recognition.
Jim Severi said he is ready to take the position and his work has already started.
"It's a great community here, and I love serving its people," he said.
During the ceremony, Jim Severi said even though the Postal Service is losing money, it isn't cutting back on service. He said it's as important now as it ever was to give the customers excellent service and make sure their needs are addressed. He said when he has someone complain about the prices, he gives them directions and tells them how to get to the nearest competitor. He said he does this because he knows they will be back.
"Sure enough, they come back 20 minutes later and say, 'You were right,'" he said.
The Woodbridge Post Office has been serving its community since 1945. As postmaster, Severi will manage six employees and a daily mail volume of 8,500 parcels. There are 1,400 addresses, 1,524 P.O. Boxes and two rural routes Severi must oversee. Severi is the eighth postmaster in the history of the Woodbridge Post Office.
