'Thank you' to our Lodi Coastal Cleanup Crew
Be careful what you pray for! On Sept. 19, Lodi Lake Coastal Cleanup rained more volunteers than we ever expected. Last year's turnout brought 110 people; this year brought 328! You can imagine our surprise — and short supplies!
Thank you to all the volunteers who very patiently coped with us as we scrambled to make order out of chaos. We managed to get the job done, thanks to you.
Our mission for the day accomplished: 113 Lodi Lake Park acres cleaned; 15 Mokelumne River miles cleaned; 1,500 pounds of trash picked up, sorted, counted and documented; three boatloads of lumber/trash/plastic removed from river; and 328 people educated!
Top 10 Trash Items: 1,560 cigarette filters; 916 food wrappers; 809 bottle caps/lids; 276 plastic bags; 214 cups, plates, utensils; 178 beverage bottles; 171 straws/stirrers; 162 plastic bags; 154 beverage cans; and 136 glass beverage bottles.
Most unusual items found: firework shells; unopened can of tuna; in-line skate; bedding; and a bag of fresh Tokay/Flame grapes.
Schools/groups represented: St. Mary's, Stockton, Lodi High, Tokay High, Millswood Middle School — largest group — 60-plus, Lincoln HS, San Joaquin Delta College, Stockton, UC Davis, Davis, CSU — East Bay, St. Peter's Grammar School, Jim Elliot CHS, Lodi, Delta Middle College, Stockton, Leroy Nichols Elementary School, A Hand Up Homeless Outreach, San Joaquin County — PW, Granite Construction, French Camp — 20 people, Wal-Mart — four employees, Stockton Colts — Hockey Team — 45 people, Julia Morgan, Stockton, West Lodi — 4-H, Troop 295- Boy Scouts, Christa McAuliffe HS, Century Christian School, Vinewood Elementary School, Larson Elementary School, Reese Elementary School, Houston Elementary School, Galt HS, Merryhill School, Stockton, Houston Elementary School, San Joaquin County — PW, general public — families and individuals.

In the meantime, folks, keep our streets and parks trash-free for the sake of the waterways, the creatures that live there and, finally, our neighbors who may drink the water downstream.
