Sheriff to protect bloodless bullfights
San Joaquin County has contracted with Our Lady of Fatima Society to provide sheriff's protection during bullfights scheduled for Oct. 17 and 19, a Saturday afternoon and Monday night.
The so-called "bloodless bullfighting" will be held in conjunction with the society's annual Portuguese Festival that weekend in Thornton.
Our Lady of Fatima will pay the sheriff's office an estimated $3,851 for 36 hours of protection by two deputies and a sergeant each of the two days.
The agreement was approved Tuesday by the Board of Supervisors.

Assemblywoman Alyson Huber named to wine committee
Assemblywoman Alyson Huber, D-El Dorado Hills, has been appointed to the Select Committee on Wine.
"Wine is an important agricultural product in my district, and significantly impacts the local economies of my counties," said Huber, whose district includes the Lodi area. "California's wine industry, made of up of mostly family wineries, produces $58.9 billion in economic value for the state each year."

San Joaquin County Supervisor Ken Vogel endorses Sieglock for Assembly seat
San Joaquin County Supervisor Ken Vogel has endorsed Republican Jack Sieglock for the 10th Assembly District seat held by Democrat Alyson Huber, according to Sieglock's campaign. Sieglock, former Lodi mayor and county supervisor, narrowly lost to Huber in the November 2008 election.

Alan Nakanishi endorsed by two county sheriffs
Former Lodi Mayor and Assemblyman Alan Nakanishi has been endorsed by San Joaquin County Sheriff Steve Moore and Amador County Sheriff Martin Ryan for the California Board of Equalization's 2nd District seat.
Nakanishi, a Republican, hopes to replace Bill Leonard, who will step down next year due to term limits.
Nakanishi is an ophthalmologist in Lodi and Stockton and co-founder of Delta Eye Medical Group.

Doug Ose endorses Paul Hegyi for Assembly
Former Sacramento Congressman Doug Ose has endorsed Republican Paul Hegyi for the 10th Assembly District seat held by Alyson Huber, D-El Dorado Hills. Hegyi will battle Jack Sieglock for the Republican nomination in 2010.
Hegyi, who lives in Elk Grove, is chief of staff for Assemblyman Van Tran, R-Garden Grove.
