What did visitors enjoy most at the Grape Festival?

The Lodi Grape Festival has come and gone with a minimum of incidents and warm, but not stifling, weather.

"There were some fights on Friday night, but not much else," Lodi Police Detective Mike Manetti said while checking out the quiet grounds Sunday afternoon, the festival's final day.

"We ejected some gang members Friday before they did anything," he said. Once gang-bangers gave bad looks to rival gang members, they were sent out of the festival, he added.

Meanwhile, some Grape Festival visitors shared what they enjoyed the most this year.

Cathy Pazdel, of Discovery Bay (born and raised in Lodi): "The kids got their picture taken holding a python. They could feel the squeeze. The lemonade was delicious. Of course, my favorite was the wine and the grape art. I love the grape art."

Jaime Worthen, of Lodi: The petting zoo and grape pavilion.

"I thought the animals were pretty good. You got to feed them."

Sara Worthen, of Lodi: "I like the shopping — especially the jewelry."

Trevor Manley, a freshman at Jim Elliot Christian High School: "Being with friends and stuff."

Kathy Dunlap, of Citrus Heights: "We came because we saw it on Channel 31. We enjoyed the reptile exhibit. You know what surprised me was how clean it is. In Sacramento, the fairgrounds never look like this."

Fred Pazdel, of Discovery Bay: "We really liked the reptile exhibit and the auditions for the kids. The kids really liked the scarecrows."

Lexus Wilson, of Stockton: "They've got real good smoothies."

" My family this year decided not to attend the festival. You have the state fair and then a few weeks later the grape festival. With the economy we just can't afford it. Let's see..we have food $, wrist bands $, more food $ and of course the games $. I would rather take two hundred bucks and take a trip to Santa Cruz or Half Moon bay. It really get's expensive with a family of 5. Hope I didn't miss much! "

Many California communities have established smoke-free registries for private residential apartment buildings, which range from complexes where smoking is entirely prohibited (whether inside private dwellings or outside) to those where certain sections of dwellings may be designated as smoking dwellings. Most California cities allow landlords to regulate smoking at will." "

" Didn't make it this year but pretty sure it was the same as last year. I used to like it when the buildings were full of all the snake oil salesmen selling all kinds of stuff like as seen on TV. Last year it seemed like it was just local businesses like F&M Bank, funeral homes and local stores which was really kind of a drag and not worth going into those buildings. "

" i am glad i did not go, it seems like a waste of time and money to go anymore. I know it is a Lodi tradition to go, but it gets old to me. Walking around the ride area with all the thugs and bad @$$ gangster type just does not seem like fun either. "

" The kids thought the reptile exhibit was pretty cool. But what we didn't like was the gangsters hanging out on Friday night over by where all the rides were. And then the San Joaquin County Probation Officers started chasing them around like a big game of cat-and-mouse. Just seemed like it was destined for trouble, so we left. "

" Had a great time at the festival. Yes, the ABBA tribute band was great, lots of fun and of course you can not go wrong with those songs.
Every year I am there for the Lions Pitch to Win (bingo), its for a great cause. Just wish they still have bacon as not a big fan of ham. Hypnotist was good but I have seen better. Food was great, funnel cake, lemonade, etc. My nachos were a little stale but with extra cheese you would never notice.
Petting zoo/kids area was a great idea. Also ejoyed the pig races "

" I don't understand how and why smoking is allowed at the Grape Festival. CA is a smoke free state, but smoking is allowed at the Grape Festival - I just don't get it. I don't enjoy going to the festival for that reason alone. Everywhere you walk, stand or sit, there is somebody blowing toxic waste into your face. I don't enjoy trying to eat a goody with smoke blowing in my face. There should be one designated smoking area in a corner furthest away from the general population, or make the festival a smoke free environment. It would be a whole lot more pleasant for the majority of us that don't smoke, although it seemed as if everybody there was smoking. In this day and age of health risks from second hand smoke, why endanger innocent people's lives? I just don't get it, nor do I appreciate it. But, this is my opinion. "
