Patrick McCarthy helps Tokay run away with 4 TDs

Accomplishment: Despite only carrying the ball eight times, Tokay High senior running back/linebacker Patrick McCarthy rushed for 192 yards and scored four touchdowns as the Tigers defeated Bear Creek 54-6 on Friday night to open up the 2009 football season.

McCarthy scored three times in the second quarter alone. He first reached the end zone on a 36-yard run on the first play of the second quarter. He then recovered a fumble and returned it 42 yards for another score. He then scored again on a 29-yard run.

Less than a minute into the third quarter, McCarthy scored again, this time on a 40-yard dash.

Family: Parents Mark and Cathy; three brothers, two sisters.

Favorite sport: Football. McCarthy has played since sixth grade. "I like everything about it: The smell of the grass, the lights, the crowd, the hard hits, I love everything," McCarthy said. "There is nothing I don't like."

Favorite athlete: Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson and San Francisco 49ers linebacker Patrick Willis. "I gotta have one for offense and one for defense," McCarthy said.

Offense or defense: Defense. "I the hitting more," McCarthy said.

Favorite hobbies: McCarthy said he likes to ride his quad, hang out with his friends and wake board with his brother. He is also in his first season as a coach for the Tokay Thunder JV Pop Warner football team.

Favorite subject: English. McCarthy said he likes to read. He is currently reading "One Knee Equals Two Feet" by John Madden.

Favorite movie: "The Hangover."

Dream car: Shelby Mustang.

Dream vacation: Hawaii

Favorite local restaurant: Casa Flores. "I like the No. 14 — chicken enchilada and a pork burrito.

Worst sports moment: "My freshman year I scored four or five touchdowns vs. St. Mary's and at the end I had a 80-yard touchdown run with 20 seconds left in the game, but then it called back for holding," McCarthy said.

Would like to meet: "Jerry Rice — just to learn more about the game," McCarthy said.

Plans: McCarthy is hoping to go to college next year and play football at the next level.

Seems like a good kid, it will be interesting to see if he can be this productive against some of the better teams on Tokay's schedule. "
