'LitterBug' song isn't helping Lodi High campus litter issue

Tuesday, September 15, 2009 6:16 AM PDT

Being concerned Lodi High students, we must say that the "LitterBug" song played on campus at lunch time is going too far.

Our principal, who seems to think that we are a bunch of adolescent delinquents who litter every day, thinks that a silly, annoying song is honestly going to make us pick up our trash. Half the kids at lunch throw away their trash, so why are we punishing the whole school?

As far as I know, this will provoke even more students to litter, out of anger and annoyance of the song that is constantly played. The song has about 10 different versions, and it is put on repetitively all through lunch. What is this showing us as a school? This is all making a big fuss out of a little issue that can be handled in a more responsible way.

Ditch the song and approach the problem more responsibly and maturely.

Well, from what they've seen here by the party you represent, dyan, they are sure to have a bad taste in their mouths about Republicans. Hopefully they will learn that it's not just Democrat or Republican and that there are right wingnuts that even the self respecting Republicans will denounce, and vice versa. "

I have already told you how sad it is that you feel that kids are all "basically slobs and have been conditioned to only care about themselves". It's just terrible that you say these things about your kids when it's YOU that is their parent. It's your job to raise them well. I wonder if this is a cycle of abuse in the family. "

" To Claire and Josh, I appreciate that you have such an opinion. To the parents of any high school students - as you well know, they have many opinions. Yes, they have strong (maybe controversial) opinions - how many have the maturity and confidence to write in to the local newspaper including their names as this only subjects them to criticism? Whether or not I agree with the opinion (which I do by the way) many kudos should be given to these students and their parents for having such a strong stance that they felt compelled to speak out (and include names; it is easy to speak out and not include your name)
My child just graduated from LHS so I asked about this song. She said it was so annoying, repetitive and juvenile that could easily understand Claire and Josh's point of view. She thought that this song only made the kids feel like they were being treated as if they were in elementary school.
I recently read that the old LHS Principal (and song author) is now at the district office. Only a couple comments - how appropriate and thank goodness! "

" My daughter (a Lodi High student) and I discussed this subject today. Though she feels that the song is silly and isn't really productive, she doesn't really have a problem with it. That being said...I think it took guts for Claire and Joshua to write a (well written) letter and put their names to it. What other forums do they have? The Lodi High paper is no more, and last I checked Lodi High IS in Lodi...is it not?

Maybe a more productive approach to solving the "litterbug" problem would be to cite offenders and make them responsible for cleaning up trash for an entire lunch period, or even to pay a fine.

As an aside; I find it LAUGHABLE that those making comments about the writers' grammar/spelling/punctuation (which by the way was FINE), don't bother to take 2 seconds to check their own. Interesting, ironic, and yet soooooo funny! "

For your information, my sister is living on her own paying her rent, paying her own expenses, and is only twenty. You probably ARE a middle-aged lodian who sits around all day doing nothing for Lodi. Josh and I are the future of Lodi and here you are trying to bring us down? And i actually did find an error, so lets just stop with the errors, because obviously you and your little "five year old mentality " enjoys picking a fight. In other words, the reason why Lodi sucks is because of a**es like you who look at every situation badly and don't appreciate the youth that are acutally making an effort to make this city a little better. Who knows, you were probably the same way when you were a kid; but lets not make assumptions, that would be rude wouldn't it now. "

It is called freedom of speech. She and all her 15 year old friends have the right to express their feelings, even if it does have to do with something your do not care for. Why dont you have a little respect? Let me tell you Mr. my sister and her friends could be out romping Lodi during class time, but instead they are in school getting involved and trying to make their school a better place! After being belittled for so many years, having electives stripped away and being taught in an unsafe environment, they have been broken.
