Auditions for Senior Follies to be held

Tuesday, September 15, 2009 6:09 AM PDT

The city of Lodi is seeking talented seniors for its 2009 Senior Follies. The auditions for the performance will be held on Sept. 17 between 4 and 7 p.m., and Sept. 19 from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Charlene Powers Lange Performing Arts Theatre at Hutchins Street Square.

If you are over the age of 50 and can sing, dance, play an instrument or perform any other talent, you are wanted. Acts may be performed solo or in a group with at least one senior member.

The Senior Follies is set up in the style of an old-fashioned Broadway Revue as a venue to feature talented seniors in the community. Each performer is asked to audition with the act which they plan to perform in the show. Acts selected for the Senior Follies are expected to provide their own costuming, choreography, music and props for the performance. All performers cast in the show will be given two complimentary tickets to the final performance.

This is the fifth year for the Senior Follies, which originally started in 2001 in coordination with the senior center located at Hutchins Street Square.

The performance will be Oct. 25 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $15 for general admission and $12 for seniors and students with ID. Tickets will go on sale Sept. 1 at the Hutchins Street Square box office and may be purchased online at www.lodi.gov, by phone at 333-5550 or in person. Box office hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and one hour prior to each performance.

Medical school tour stops in French Camp

The drive for the University of California, Merced School of Medicine to serve the San Joaquin Valley will be in French Camp today.

The Community Listening Tour, launched July 7 in Fresno, is presented by the Valley Coalition for UC Merced Medical School as part of its outreach and education efforts to gain support for a medical school in the Valley.

The tour has stopped in six counties to date.

Larry Ruhstaller, a San Joaquin County supervisor and member of the coalition's San Joaquin County committee, said the input from San Joaquin Valley residents and leaders is critical, because the medical education program will be built on the needs of the nine-county region.

In February, the coalition received a $147,000 grant from The California Endowment to ensure communities throughout the San Joaquin are involved in the planning of the medical school through events such as the Community Listening Tour.

The 90-minute session will open with short introductory statements by representatives of the coalition executive committee and of the San Joaquin committee, and be followed by a PowerPoint presentation of the medical school planning process and audience input.

The free public session will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Health Plan of San Joaquin Community Room, 7751 S. Manthey Road, French Camp.
