Soroptimist International of Lodi Sunrise recently celebrated its 20th anniversary at a dinner installation meeting.

The club honored charter members Bev Gabrielson, Brenda Kosaka, Dorothea Madamba, Joan Morrison and Bobbe Xenos. New officers installed are Maxine Crow, president; Pam Barghoorn, vice president; Sheila McClain, recording secretary; Liz Kass, corresponding secretary; Linda Kronemann, treasurer; and Jan Honey, director.

Soroptimists are dedicated to improving the lives of women and girls in the local community and throughout the world. The Sunrise club had a very successful year meeting this goal through their service projects and donations.

Three awards, the Women’s Opportunity Award, the Violet Richardson Award and the Making a Difference for Women Award, were presented to a head of household woman, who improved her status by gaining additional education and training; a high school student who performed extraordinary volunteer projects; and a woman who made an outstanding contribution to the betterment of women’s lives.

The club presented over 120 gifts to second grade students at a local school in a low-income neighborhood to give to their mothers for Christmas. Members spent their Saturday of Service, an annual hands-on community service project, assisting children at the World of Wonders Science Museum’s grand opening.

The club held a "baby shower" and donated baby gifts and supplies to a local MOPS group for their teen mother’s program. Club members manned a booth and participated in the American Cancer Society Relay for Life.

The club continued their support for Meadows Depot, a residential facility for women who are recovering from drug and alcohol addiction. These young women and their children are provided with a secure environment where they can pursue their education and gain skills to obtain permanent employment.

In addition to financial support, members assembled welcome bags containing towels, personal care items and toiletries for women entering the program. Members attended district and region conferences where the club received several awards for meeting and exceeding Soroptimist project goals. The club is beginning their new year with new meeting days and times.

Meetings will now be held on the second and fourth Thursday evenings at 6:30 p.m. at the Richmaid Restaurant. The first meeting will be September 10th. Women interested in service to the community are invited to attend any Soroptimist meeting. Additional information can be obtained by calling Jan Honey at 365-9453.
