Freeway chase ends with fatal shooting of suspect

By News-Sentinel Staff

A man died early Tuesday after a high-speed chase from Stockton to Elk Grove ended when California Highway Patrol officers opened fire on him.

Authorities say the man, whose name has not been released, was unarmed but may have been under the influence of drugs.

Around 2:30 a.m., Stockton-area CHP officers tried to stop a white GMC pick-up truck for a vehicle code violation at Highway 4 and Center Street, according to Sacramento County Sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Tim Curran.

The male driver sped north on Interstate 5, reaching speeds of 100 mph.

The driver exited at Laguna Boulevard, made a U-turn at Harbour Point Drive and began heading back onto the freeway, Curran said.

An officer pinned the truck against a guard rail with his patrol car, and five other CHP officers surrounded the truck, according to a news release from Curran. They ordered the man out of the truck, and one officer used a Taser that had no effect on the driver.

The man attempted to flee in his truck, driving toward the officers, Curran said. At that point officers opened fire, striking the man multiple times. Officers pulled him from the truck and performed first aid until paramedics arrived and pronounced the man dead.

The six officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave, under standard CHP policy. They include two officers based in Stockton (which patrols to the Sacramento County line), each with 10 years of experience.

The other four officers are based in South Sacramento and include a sergeant with 20 years of experience, two officers with four years of experience each and one two-year officer.

" "WTF" Are you joking me? Police officers and CHP carry guns to protect themselves from dangerous people like this man! And did you not read the part where it said he he attempted to flee the scene and started towards the officers. I want to know exactly "WTF" what you would do if you were one of these officers that had to make the decision to open fire? Just think about how maybe the officer wanted to make it home safely instead of his family identifying him at the coroners,(had this man killed an innocent officer)! "

" The only reason the perp is dead is because he tried to run over some officers!

That's called attempted murder. People can kill others with cars (I had to point out the obvious for WTF and T & C). I can't believe some people here are trying to say this was just a regular guy with a traffic boo-boo.

Also, if he had been under the influence of drugs (we'll see what the tox. tests say), it would have been dangerous *not* to stop him! Drivers under the influence kill innnocent people. "

" wtf--

Come on, you are seriously defending his guy? If you and your family were on the freeway, and a man, possibly under the influence of drugs or alcohol, slams into you, would you think different? Do not put down the CHP, or any other local law inforcement, they have been through enough this year. They have lost a lot of men, on duty, thanks to idiots like this one, and you are defending him. They did what they had to do to prevent YET ANOTHER FALLEN OFFICER. "

" You guys are still wa-a-a-y off base. The CHP used too much force and in the end, deadly force. A while back, too many innocent bystanders were being injured due to cops insisting on high speed pursuits; and it was the cops doing the injuring. They soon decided that if the person was going too fast, they'd call off the chase. There has been too much police violence lately and this is another case of that.

Sure, the guy could have done some things differently; but then, so could the CHP. "

" The perp here was a former movie star- I think it was "Dumb And Dumber". Charge at the cops with your vehicle...that'll work. Its Darwinian. Like jumping in front of a speeding train. We need more violent perps that make similar bright choices to ease the prison crowding and taxpayer burden. Its tough on lawyers. "

" WTF??????

Have you ever been in a confrontation? Ever? The Officer's lives were under direct threat by the man's BEST weapon, his vehicle.

"The man attempted to flee in his truck, driving toward the officers"

They followed the protocol for using deadly force perfectly. They stepped up their response appropiately based on the man's actions.

Would have rather had a Police funeral and read about how an Officer was run over?

Keep in mind, the Officer's actions were based directly on the suspects actions.

What he could have done?

A- Stop when the first attempt to stop him occured.
B- Stop at any point after that.
C- When he was pinned by the patrol car against the guard rail - STOP
D- Stop when tazed
E- Not attempt to run over the Officer's

His choice. "

" T & C, did you have your reading glasses on? "I did NOT read where this driver allegedly posed a "Physical threat to ANY trooper."

The suspect driving toward the officers had his car as a weapon. "

" wtf, I won't be afraid if I'm out driving late at night and get stopped for some minor infraction. There's a correct way of dealing with it.

But this fella chose to run away (mistake #1), engaged CHP in a high-speed pursuit (mistake #2), and when cornered, drove toward the officers (mistake #3).

I guess most of us bloggers with enough common sense won't get past mistake #1. "

" Der guy was shot and killed because he tried to run over the officers with a car. I guess you could call that a "traffic violation." Right. "

" I think the officers did the right thing. What if this man would have caused an accident and killed an innocent bystander? What if he caused an accident, and killed an innocent child? I think if he decided to run from the police, and put everyone else on the freeway in danger, it's too damn bad that he ended up dead. Better him, than an innocent freeway driver. We are way too easy on criminals, and that is why they think they can get away with this type of behavior. "

" As it was posted, if the red and blue lights come on in back of me, I`ll pull over. Remember, the person being pursued sets the speed of the pursuers. And since this happened at 2:30 AM, all of us good citizens were in our beds sound asleep, or up making a head call. "

" I did NOT read where this driver allegedly posed a "Physical threat to ANY trooper." I did not READ where the CRIME is was alleged to commit was a FELONY. I did not READ where the suspect possessed a firearm. In fact, this reporter failed to even disclose the traffic offense. Perhaps a burned out tail light. Your guess is as good as mine. The penalty for "Failing to stop" with blue lights are turned on, Should NEVER be "Death"! I have one question to ask of the troopers and all those who feel this traffic offender "Deserved to die": "The trooper had the truck "Pinned" against the guard rail, and was ordered out of the vehicle. Do you really think for a moment he could open his door?

Bottom line is he should have pulled over. "

" You guys are nuts! A man was shot and killed over a **traffic violation**....Geez! Unlike our own LPD, the CHP tends to get a little crazy in their pursuit of "suspects"....they tasered the guy, then shot him. Chances are, he ran because he had expired tags and was probably just leaving a bar - the time was 2:30 AM. No, in this case, the CHP went wa-a-a-y overboard; especially since they apparently needed FIVE cops to allegedly subdue this guy for a ***traffic stop***

All you other posters better hope you're not out driving late at night and get stopped for some minor infraction. "
