Freeway chase ends with fatal shooting of suspect
A man died early Tuesday after a high-speed chase from Stockton to Elk Grove ended when California Highway Patrol officers opened fire on him.
Authorities say the man, whose name has not been released, was unarmed but may have been under the influence of drugs.
Around 2:30 a.m., Stockton-area CHP officers tried to stop a white GMC pick-up truck for a vehicle code violation at Highway 4 and Center Street, according to Sacramento County Sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Tim Curran.
The male driver sped north on Interstate 5, reaching speeds of 100 mph.
The driver exited at Laguna Boulevard, made a U-turn at Harbour Point Drive and began heading back onto the freeway, Curran said.
An officer pinned the truck against a guard rail with his patrol car, and five other CHP officers surrounded the truck, according to a news release from Curran. They ordered the man out of the truck, and one officer used a Taser that had no effect on the driver.
The man attempted to flee in his truck, driving toward the officers, Curran said. At that point officers opened fire, striking the man multiple times. Officers pulled him from the truck and performed first aid until paramedics arrived and pronounced the man dead.
The six officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave, under standard CHP policy. They include two officers based in Stockton (which patrols to the Sacramento County line), each with 10 years of experience.
The other four officers are based in South Sacramento and include a sergeant with 20 years of experience, two officers with four years of experience each and one two-year officer.

That's called attempted murder. People can kill others with cars (I had to point out the obvious for WTF and T & C). I can't believe some people here are trying to say this was just a regular guy with a traffic boo-boo.
Also, if he had been under the influence of drugs (we'll see what the tox. tests say), it would have been dangerous *not* to stop him! Drivers under the influence kill innnocent people. "

Come on, you are seriously defending his guy? If you and your family were on the freeway, and a man, possibly under the influence of drugs or alcohol, slams into you, would you think different? Do not put down the CHP, or any other local law inforcement, they have been through enough this year. They have lost a lot of men, on duty, thanks to idiots like this one, and you are defending him. They did what they had to do to prevent YET ANOTHER FALLEN OFFICER. "

Sure, the guy could have done some things differently; but then, so could the CHP. "

Have you ever been in a confrontation? Ever? The Officer's lives were under direct threat by the man's BEST weapon, his vehicle.
"The man attempted to flee in his truck, driving toward the officers"
They followed the protocol for using deadly force perfectly. They stepped up their response appropiately based on the man's actions.
Would have rather had a Police funeral and read about how an Officer was run over?
Keep in mind, the Officer's actions were based directly on the suspects actions.
What he could have done?
A- Stop when the first attempt to stop him occured.
B- Stop at any point after that.
C- When he was pinned by the patrol car against the guard rail - STOP
D- Stop when tazed
E- Not attempt to run over the Officer's
His choice. "

The suspect driving toward the officers had his car as a weapon. "

But this fella chose to run away (mistake #1), engaged CHP in a high-speed pursuit (mistake #2), and when cornered, drove toward the officers (mistake #3).
I guess most of us bloggers with enough common sense won't get past mistake #1. "
