Five nominated for Lodi Community Hall of Fame for 2009

Inductees in the Lodi Community Hall of Fame for 2009 include leaders in education, business, agriculture and real estate.

Sponsored by the Lodi Boys and Girls Club, the Hall of Fame program recognizes local men and women who have made enduring contributions to the Lodi community. Inductees are to be honored at a dinner and program set for Oct. 17.

Honorees this year are:

— The late Frank Sasaki, who owned and operated a TV and appliance store for 49 years. He began Sak's TV Repair, which he later expanded to Sak's TV and Appliance, then Sak's TV and Home Furnishings, and finally Sak's Fine Furnishings. He served as an executive board member of the 49'er Council, held leadership roles including president of the Lodi Buddhist Church and the Japanese American Citizen League, and led committees in both Kiwanis and the Lodi Lion's Club. Sasaki served as a founding board member of the Bank of Lodi and later became a board member of the Lodi Memorial Hospital Foundation.

— Robert Tan, who taught at Lodi Academy for 20 years and founded the Lodi Children's Chorus. Since its beginning in 1983, he has continued to direct the choir, which as performed at Disneyland, Washington, D.C., the Vancouver World Fair, Hawaii as well as on cruise ships. He has also served as choir director at English Oaks SDA Church and Zion Reformed Church. Tan also teaches voice lessons to students privately and finds fundraisers for them to be involved in such as the LOEL Center, Salvation Army, the Women's Center, the Lodi Boys and Girls Club as well as for Hurricane Katrina victims.

— William Dauer, a retired CEO of the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce, who relocated to Lodi and served as CEO of the Lodi Memorial Hospital Foundation for 10 years. He was part of the group to found Fellowship in Action, a homeless shelter for men which later became the Salvation Army's men's shelter. He has also served as a board member of the LOEL Center for many years.

— John Ledbetter, who owns and operates Vino Farms. He has served in many agriculture organizations, including California Association of Winegrape Growers, California Wine Education Foundation, Lodi District Grape Growers, Lodi Woodbridge Winegrape Commission, San Joaquin Farm Bureau, Winegrape Growers of America and the Wine Market Council. He has been involved other community organizations, including Lodi Boys and Girls Club, Kiwanis, Lodi Community Foundation, Lodi House, LOEL Center, Hutchins Street Square Foundation and St. John's Church.

— Ivan Suess, who worked as a real estate agent for nearly 20 years, first with Katzakian & Schaffer Realtors and then in a partnership with Schaffer Suess & Boyd Realtors. He was involved with numerous organizations. Some of them include Lodi Downtown Merchants, Lodi District Chamber of Commerce, Lodi 4H/FFA Boosters, Lodi Sports Hall of Fame, Lodi Boys and Girls Club, Lodi Kiwanis Club, Salvation Army, Lodi Rotary Club, Lodi Association of Realtors, Hutchins Street Square and the LOEL Foundation. He continues to serve on the board for the LOEL Center.

Doors will open for the Hall of Fame dinner at 5:30 p.m. and dinner will follow at 6:30 p.m. at the Lodi Boys and Girls Club. Those interested in attending, may contact the club at 334-2697.
