Got a neat quilt, art or photography?

The Lodi Grape Festival is looking for local residents who want to show off their quilting, art and photo skills at the annual Grape Festival on Sept. 17-20. Prize money will be offered.

Grape Festival officials are also seeking non-profit groups to create grape murals for the festival, with prize money ranging from $200 to $2,000. Entry deadline is Sept. 4. For more information, call 369-2771 or visit www.grapefestival.com.

Fees to go up at Micke Grove, county parks

It will cost $5 per vehicle to visit Micke Grove Regional Park in south Lodi beginning Sept. 1. The parking fee will be going up from the present $3. Fees will also go up at Stillman Magee Regional Park in Clements, Oak Grove in north Stockton, Westgate Landing near Terminous, Dos Reis in Lathrop and Mossdale in Lathrop.

Rental fees at Micke Grove will also go up on Sept. 1. They include weekday use of the auditorium, up from $400 to $500, and ballfields from $30 to $35. The Japanese Garden teahouse will be available for a $150 rental fee.

New bus service along Highway 99 corridor

Galt residents will be able to take advantage of a new bus service Saturday mornings. It will run along the South County Transit/Links Highway 99 Express Route, which is well-traveled during the week, according to a news release from Jon Johnson, the city's transit coordinator.

Buses will leave from Galt City Hall every two hours starting at 8:20 a.m., and the last bus from Sacramento will arrive in Galt at 5:25 p.m. The buses will go north to Elk Grove and to Florin Towne Center in Sacramento. On their southbound trips, the buses will also stop in Lodi.

Also, for Dial-A-Ride customers, there will be a new group discount rate starting September 1. The fare will be reduced by $0.75 when five or more passengers board the bus at the same place and are traveling to the same destination.

Rep. Jerry McNerney to discuss veterans issues

Rep. Jerry McNerney, D-Pleasanton, will participate in a roundtable discussion on veterans issues at 2:30 p.m. today at the Karl Ross American Legion Post, 2020 Plymouth Road, Stockton.

McNerney, along with representatives from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and other community leaders, will speak about the new medical center and nursing home for veterans planned for the Stockton-French Camp area, an update on legislation he authored to address the needs of veterans with traumatic brain injury, plus other veterans' issues. Delta assembling bond oversight committee

San Joaquin Delta College is seeking applications from qualified citizens to fill "Foundation," "Business," "Tax Payers" and "At-Large" positions on the Measure L Bond Citizens' Oversight Committee. The committee is responsible for reviewing expenditures related to the College's $250 million general obligation bond, Measure L, which was approved by voters on March 2, 2004.

The committee consists of at least nine members who must reside within the San Joaquin Delta Community College District. Members must also be 18 years or older, and may not be an employee, vendor, contractor or consultant for the district.

Committee responsibilities include reviewing quarterly expenditure reports produced by the district, informing the public concerning the district's expenditure of bond proceeds and presenting an annual report to the Board of Trustees.

Applications and documentation for these committee positions are available online at www.deltacollege.edu. Interested applicants may attend an informational workshop at 6 p.m. on Sept. 2 in the San Joaquin Delta College Board Room (Adm. Room 103), 5151 Pacific Ave., Stockton. Applications must be received in the Superintendent/President's Office by 5 p.m. on Sept. 11.

It is anticipated that the Board of Trustees will make these committee appointments at the Oct. 20 board meeting.

Two Lodi Unified School District schools rank in top 10 in West

Two Lodi Unified School District campuses have been listed among the top 10 public schools in the West by an outside organization.

NeighborhoodScout.com used its own quality rating algorithm, based on state-specific test scores for each school and standardized using national test scores by students in each state, to uncover the very best of the best, according to an article posted on line at www.walletpop.com.

The group searched more 100,000 public schools in all 50 states to arrive at its list of winners.

Both Elkhorn Middle School and Middle College High School were ranked No. 1 in their respective grade-level lists on the Web site.

They, too, were among those recognized by the federal government for helping students achieve at an exceptional level and making significant progress in closing the achievement gap. Only 320 schools nationwide were named as 2008 No Child Left Behind-Blue Ribbon Schools last September.

Assembly hopeful gets endorsement

Paul Hegyi, an Elk Grove Republican seeking the 10th Assembly District seat held by Alyson Huber, D-El Dorado Hills, has received the endorsement of San Diego Assemblyman Martin Garrick, assistant Republican caucus leader.

Hegyi ran for the Assembly seat in 2008, but lost in the primary to former Lodi Mayor Jack Sieglock, who is also seeking Huber's seat.
