Send a note of appreciation
My friend and colleague, Steve Berkowitz, is gravely ill and being cared for at Lodi Memorial Hospital.
Steve and I taught together for many years at Tokay High School until his retirement over a decade ago. Steve taught political science, government, economics and international relations to generations of Lodi and Tokay High School students.
I've taught with many excellent teachers over the last 30 years, and I would have to rank Steve as one of the best of the best: highly intelligent, well-informed, compassionate, good-humored, and amazingly dedicated and conscientious. He set high standards for his students and supported them in facing the challenges he set for them. Yet, he was admirably patient. Steve is one of the most decent men I've ever known. I'm honored to say he's been my friend for over 25 years.
I know Steve has many friends, colleagues and former students in the community. If you also feel respect and affection for Steve and appreciate his admirable contributions to education in Lodi, I encourage you to write a letter to the editor of the NewsSentinel, send a card or note to Steve at Lodi Memorial (975 S. Fairmont Ave., Lodi, CA 95240), or do both. I know Steve will appreciate hearing from you.
