Two arrested after drugs found in Galt apartment

Suspect's children were turned over to CPS; Hazmat crews spend hours at home

Two people were arrested, two children were taken into protective custody and hazardous materials crews spent hours at a Galt apartment Monday night after police said they found meth lab components.

John Beathard, 44, and Katherine Culbertson, 32, were booked into the Sacramento County Jail on suspicion of child endangerment and multiple felony drug charges.

Culbertson's children, ages 5 and 13, were unharmed and were turned over to Child Protective Services, said Galt Police Sgt. John Rocha.

Police went to the 600 block of E Street, where they believed a wanted parolee was staying, at 1:43 p.m. Monday to serve a search warrant.

Beathard, who previously lived in Lodi, was believed to be staying at the home, Rocha said.

Police said they found methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia in Beathard's possession. While searching the home, detectives allegedly found chemicals and other components typically used to make methamphetamine.

State drug investigators were called in, and by the time they arrived, searched the home, documented the evidence and seized it, the operation lasted until around midnight, Rocha said.

Though investigators wore full protective suits, no other neighbors were evacuated, he said. Though some components appeared to have already been used in a drug lab, it did not appear that the home itself had housed the lab, Rocha said.

Beathard has previous drug convictions in San Joaquin County, and he most recently pleaded guilty in May 2008 to possession of a controlled substance, according to court records.

" Everybody complaining about Galt PD...just be glad they did what they were supposed to do this time.

From the article: "Though some components appeared to have already been used in a drug lab, it did not appear that the home itself had housed the lab..."

But this would not preclude the occupants of that apartment from possibly trying to start their own "meth" lab...which would have been a horror waiting to happen. "

" Galt police are mandated to line the city coffers by issuing parking tickets on flea market days. Make sure your tires are not even 1" on the rolled curbs or they will ticket you for "parking on the sidewalk". Crime in Galt will always take a back seat to revenue garning traffic citations. "

" I see it as Galt Police are to busy keeping the Twin Cities areas safe and not paying attention to the actual downtown area of Galt. My family lives in those newer houses off of Twin Cities and I always see galt police there but when I go to downtown I never see a cop, unless its flea market day. I am sure that most of the police in Galt have houses in the Twin Cities area, could that be why they patrol there so much?
Maybe it should be its own town, the town of Twin Cites and the town of Galt? Like Laguna and Elk Grove. "

" Jamie, don't apologize. They were probably too busy at the flea market looking for people selling counterfeit purses or unlicensed NFL gear. You know, more important things. "

" ok i guess that statement was rude toward Galt police, but they seem to have thier hands tied when it comes t0 what to do with drug dealing in Galt. "

" It is about time. Galt police have had trouble with those apts. for a long time. We need a new courthouse in Galt so that all these so called petty drug dealers can go to court and get some type of punishment rather than the look the other way the Galt police usually do. "
