Performing Animal Welfare Society gives presentation to Rotary Club

Video clips of precious cargo being loaded onto an Air Force C-17 transport aircraft flickered on a projector screen Thursday at the Lodi Rotary Club. The cargo was not military Humvees or tanks, but an African elephant named Maggie.

The video was part of a presentation by the co-founders of the Performing Animal Welfare Society, Ed Stewart and Pat Derby.

"I never want to hear anyone complaining about taking their dog to the vet," joked Stewart, while explaining how Maggie was transported from Alaska to the 2,300-acre PAWS sanctuary in San Andreas.

After the videos of Maggie's entry into the sanctuary, Derby, a short, energetic woman with bright orange hair — and a self-proclaimed "queen of fundraising" — stood and spoke about the sanctuary.

PAWS is home to five Asian and four African elephants. Over 30 tigers are located at the sanctuary, and they consume about 3,000 pounds of food a week.

Primates, bears and other rescued animals are also housed at the foothill sanctuary.
