Regional Roundup

Library will not open until Tuesday

The Lodi Public Library at 201 W. Locust St. will not open its doors to the public until 10 a.m. Tuesday.

The one-day delay is because the staff needs more time for finishing touches after the library's renovations, Library Services Director Nancy Martinez said. The library was scheduled to open Monday.

The library moved temporarily to a building on Pine St. The public will notice a new children's area, front entranceway and restrooms.

Senior community starts home visit program

Emeritus at Austin Gardens, a senior living community and provider of Alzheimer's and dementia care services, is launching a home visit program. The program, "You Don't Have to Live with Us for Help," is a part of Emeritus Senior Living's Safety Somewhere program.

"We realize that there are many seniors in our area going without the vital health, social and supportive services they need to maintain their quality of life at home," said Jenanne Bull, community relations director at Austin Gardens, in a press release.

The complimentary services will include nurse evaluation to help identify care needs, a support system check to identify potential challenges based upon gaps in needed assistance, referrals to other area providers, post-visit follow-up coordination with families, and access to Emeritus resources, such as family lending library or senior safety tips.

Pacific kicks off free concert season

Some of the best high school jazz musicians from throughout the country will gather at the Brubeck Institute on the campus of University of the Pacific from Aug. 9 through 15 for a one-week intensive jazz colony led by some of the top jazz artists and clinicians in the industry.

The annual program will culminate in two free concerts by both the artists and colonists.

The 2009 Artists Concert will be held on at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 14 in Faye Spanos Concert Hall. The 2009 Colonists Concert will be held at 3 p.m. Aug. 15. Both concerts are free and open to the public.

"The musicianship of the colonists never ceases to amaze me," Steve Anderson, executive director of the Brubeck Institute, said in a written statement.

"Though they are still in high school, they demonstrate ability and talent that will impress even the most knowledgeable jazz fan. They are not only keeping the art of jazz thriving, they are advancing it in new, fresh, and exciting directions."

The 19 colonists, chosen from scores of applications by a panel of judges, come from New York, California, Colorado, New Jersey, Oregon, Arizona, Florida, Texas and Illinois. They will study with the artist faculty in rehearsals, lessons, seminars, master classes and perform in jam sessions and concerts.

The Summer Jazz Colony began in 2002 and is one of five programs offered by the Brubeck Institute, which was established in 2000 to honor Pacific's distinguished alumni, Dave and Iola Brubeck.
