Laws are to protect our animals
Lodi has been my home for more than 50 years, and I have always shared my life with cats and dogs as pets.
It is painful to have an animal accidentally killed by an automobile, but Lodi has laws to protect our animals.
Perhaps it is not commonly known, but there is a leash law for both cats and dogs. This law applies to any animal off your private property. Leashed animals are very, very rarely hit by cars.
There is a law requiring dogs and cats to be licensed so lost animals can be easily returned to their rightful owners. Legally, a household may have a total of five animals — cats, dogs, birds, rodents, reptiles, etc.
There are also guidelines of courtesy and community that make Lodi an animal-friendly place to live. Cleaning up after our animals as soon as they defecate ensures that our neighbors do not have the smells and flies attracted by feces left lying. Spaying and neutering our pets avoids the heart-wrenching need to euthanise animals. Keeping our fences tight and deep (dogs and bunnies can burrow) prevents our animals from escaping into unsafe territory. Keeping pet food inside our homes avoids enticing opossums and raccoons who are always on the lookout for an easy food source. Wild animals may be cute, but they are not good neighbors.
We can all help keep Lodi a pet-safe environment as we live these simple laws and guidelines.
