Liberty Ranch coaches in place for fall season
Liberty Ranch High School is officially ready for its inaugural fall sports season.
The new Galt high school recently filled its two remaining head coaching positions for its fall sports teams.
Bill Fagan will be coaching the cross country squad and Grant Denney will be taking the reins of the girls tennis program.
Fagan, a physical education teacher at McCaffrey Middle School in Galt, also coached cross country at McCaffrey last year. Before that, he was the cross country coach at Greer Middle School where he coached many current Galt High runners including state qualifiers Lauren Petersen and Justin Coupe.
"I know a lot about cross country doing it in middle school and going to the high school races," said Fagan, who is a runner himself and competed in about 25 races last year, including four half marathons and three triathlons. "I think it will be nice knowing a lot of the kids. It should be a natural, smooth transition, I hope."
Fagan said most if not all of the cross country runners at Liberty Ranch, which will start its first school year with only freshmen and sophomores, will compete in the frosh-soph two-mile races this fall. Then starting in the 2010-11 school year, they will officially be varsity.
Denney has coached tennis at various levels for the past seven years including being the head of Cordova High's program. Last season, he was a volunteer coach for Vista Del Lago.
Denney, who lives in Gold River, was familiar with tennis in Galt because of Galt High's head tennis coach Suzanne Stebbins. After coaching against her, the two developed a strong rapport. On Wednesday night, Denney attended one of Stebbins' practices where he met players — some of which will be making the switch from Galt to Liberty Ranch.
Liberty Ranch will have to compete against varsity teams like Galt this fall even tough it is a frosh-soph program. Then in 2010, the Hawks will officially join the Sierra Valley Conference. Having coached at new high schools before, Denney is looking forward to starting up the Hawks tennis program.
"This is nothing new for me," said Denney, a retired elementary school teacher and former deputy sheriff. "I love building programs and starting with the freshmen and sophomores and seeing them go through their senior years."
