Inaugural race will pit national champs
The men's professional race for Sunday's inaugural Lodi Cycle Fest appears to be shaping up to be a very competitive ride featuring some of the top cyclists from California.
The reigning USA Cycling Professional Criterium national champion, Rahsaan Bahati of Rock Racing, is confirmed to compete in the 75-minute criterium that will involve numerous laps on the .08-mile Downtown Lodi course.
Bahati enters Sunday's race on a roll, having won his last three criteriums. He was first at the Manhattan Beach Grand Prix on June 28 and won the Davis 4th of July Downtown Criterium and San Luis Obispo Downtown Criterium last weekend.
A handful of talented riders will be looking to end his streak in Lodi. Ken Hanson, the current USA Cycling Elite Criterium national champion who rides for Team Type 1, and the 2007 USA Cycling Elite Criterium national champion Daniel Holloway who rides for Garmin/Slipstream, will both be vying for the first Lodi Cycle Fest title.
Hanson finished third to Bahati at the Manhattan Beach Grand Prix and was the runner-up at the San Luis Obispo Criterium. Both Hanson and Bahati will both be racing in the San Rafael Twilight Criterium on Saturday before Sunday's race in Lodi. Stockton's Andres Gil, a rider with Delta Velo and a Bear Creek High School Spanish teacher, is the local favorite and will be looking for a top spot among Bahati and Hanson. Gil said he and his Delta Velo teammates — who are hosting the race — will be working together to try and have at least one of their riders be one of the first to cross the finish line. It won't be easy however, as a lot of strategy goes into the race.
"There are a lot of things going on when you are racing a crit race," he said. "... It is kinda like gambling and you never know what is going to happen."
This is the first cycling event of this magnitude to hit Lodi and the biggest for San Joaquin County since the Tour of California's Stage 3 start in Stockton back in February of 2007, according to assistant race organizer Damian Gonzalez.
The Lodi Cycle Fest will also feature a professional women's race and several amateur races. For the public, the Lodi Cycle Fest will hold a free kids race and an adult beach cruiser race. As of Thursday evening, about 115 cyclists had signed up for the event online. For more information or to register, go to www.deltavelo.com.
Racing will go from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The men's professional race will begin at 3:15 p.m. A full schedule, details on the race and cycling will be available in Saturday's News-Sentinel.
