Education is the goal of school

Tuesday, July 7, 2009 12:26 AM PDT

Following is a copy of an e-mail I sent to all of the members of the Lodi Unified School District Board of Education after their budget study session:

Dear Board Members: First of all, I would like to thank Ms. Cassel for her impassioned plea on behalf of the high school librarians. It is apparent that Ms. Cassel does have the academic welfare of the students in mind when she votes on school district policy. I would also like to thank Mr. Thompson (a former teacher of mine at Lodi High) for making the sensible suggestions about ways to keep the librarians, and thus also save the jobs of dedicated high school teachers.

I feel that board members who oppose cutting of freshman sports in favor of cutting librarians are misguided. We must always remember that the goal of any school district should be the education of its students. Any other extra-curricular activities, such as sports, must always take second place to academics. Cutting the librarian positions at the high school level will send the wrong message to the students and parents of the district. It would be akin to saying: "Pool service workers and sports are more important than academics." Is that the message the board wants to send out to the public?

" Ah Mary, you ideas are courageous but they are so 1950. To think that the purpose of a school is to educate children is an idea of the white man from the racist period before the enlightenment of the 1960s. School now are for feeding the poor and providing day care so the single parents aren't interrupted during Oprah. They are for indoctrinating the youth at BO will save the world from global warming and evil corporations. Forget about reading, writing and arithmetic, there is social engineering to do and money to waste. "
