Two men survive Tracy plane crash

Two men survived a plane crash shortly after noon today when they broke glass to free themselves from the cockpit submerged in the Delta-Mendota canal.

The pilot and the passenger were sitting on the embankment when they were found by Tracy firefighters and taken to Sutter Tracy Community Hospital, where they're being treated for minor injuries.

They were soggy and a little bloodied, but had no serious injuries, said Tracy fire division chief Andy Kellogg.

"They are damn lucky," Kellogg said.

The men took off from the Tracy Municipal Airport this afternoon and had some trouble with their plane. How it malfunctioned remains unclear, but whatever it was prompted the pilot to turn around just west of Tracy. As he turned, the plan quickly lost altitude, Kellogg said.

"They tried to land in a field, but realized that wasn't going to happen, so they aimed for the levee by the canal," he said. "They wound up going right in the water."

The men went under with the plane just southwest of the Tracy airport, but managed to crawl out and swim to shore.

San Joaquin County Sheriff's deputies and Tracy police left the airplane in the canal. They couldn't locate it as of 2 p.m. this afternoon and believe that the heavy current may have dragged it far beyond where it crashed.

The men are being treated for minor injuries. Their identities remain unknown.
