Fishing with Russ

At New Melones, the kokanee bite is still very good. Fish are at about 60 feet deep and are hitting on hoochies in pink/white and white/green behind a Vance dodger in either of two colors, watermelon copper or the new blue copper. Start from either Tuttle Town or Glory Hole ramp and troll all the way to the south end of the lake.

Kokanee Power had their annual Kokanee Derby last weekend and the largest catch was a 17-inch fish in the kokanee division.

At Pardee, the trollers are being rewarded a bit better lately with both rainbow trout and kokanee. The bite is doing better and the depths for trout are best at 20 to 40 feet and kokanee at 50 to 70 feet. Best areas to try are the mouth of the river and inside the river channel upstream to the point across from grapevine gulch.

Best lures for the kokanee are spinners tipped with either shoepeg corn or a small piece of nightcrawler. Troll mini-hoochies in either pink or orange behind a Seps sidekick orange copper or neon orange.

Trout trollers are doing best trolling Half Fast blades and crawler combination or small spoons behind a dodger.

At Camanche, trout are doing well using small spoons while trolling the river channel of the lake from about 300 yards east of Big Hat Island all the way to the dam. Use small spoons such as the Sockeye Slammer, Excel or R Lure. The fish are 25 to 40 feet deep and you should be trolling at 2 to 3 miles per hour for best results. Dave Douglas of Lodi caught three kokanee this past week in one outing along with numerous rainbows.

At Caples Lake, a large plant of big trout was planted in this impoundment last week and the catch has been very good both for boat and bank fishermen. Catches of 6-to-10 pound fish have not been uncommon. Use Kastmaster or Magic Bullet for good action from the bank. Trollers are using spoons like the Excel, R Lure and Needlefish for excellent results.

At Hogan, the striped bass are starting to hit. The trollers are reporting a very limited bite on shad and anchovies in the open water. No reports of boiling at this time.
