Matt Fuson blasts slam, two homeruns in Lodi Baseball Club victory
When Matt Fuson hits one homer at Tony Zupo Field, opposing teams better be scared.
In his days playing for Lodi High School, the Lodi Legion, the Lodi GrapeSox and his current team the Lodi Baseball Club, Fuson has never hit just one home run in a game at Zupo Field. Instead, he's just put up a bunch of multi-homer nights.
On Thursday, Fuson continued the trend by hitting a grand slam and a three-run home run to carry Lodi to an 11-8 victory over the L.A. Urban Barons. A&W Root Beer gave all the fans in attendance coupons for free root beer floats to celebrate the grand slam.
Fuson was hit by a pitch in his first at-bat and came up to the plate looking for revenge in his second appearance.
"I was kinda mad because he hit me and the bases were loaded and I got it," Fuson said.
Prior to the game Lodi manager Leon Lee found out his son Derrek Lee also hit a grand slam and three-run homer in the Chicago Cubs' 9-5 win over the Brewers. Then he watched Fuson do the same thing. Alex Ring and Jake Fuller also added homers and Tyler Kuresa recorded a hit and an RBI for Lodi.
"We have been doing a lot of hitting and are working on being relaxed at the plate," Lee said. "It is kinda of contagious; hitters hit better when they are feeding off each other and having fun at the plate."
Hunter Carnevale got the win for Lodi, giving up five runs in five innings. Thomas Berolzheimer pitched the ninth, recording two strikeouts for the save.
Lodi (19-1) will now begin a three-game series against the El Dorado Hills Vipers today at Zupo at 7 p.m.
