The latest news on local athletes who are continuing to play at the college or pro levels.

Zach Phillips
Sport: Baseball
High school: Galt
Professional: Frisco Rough Riders/Texas League Class AA/Texas Rangers affiliate
Phillips, a pitcher, was promoted from the Class A Advanced Bakersfield Blaze to the Frisco Rough Riders of the Texas League Class AA last week. He appeared in one game last week and did not figure in the decision. He pitched 4 and 2/3 innings and allowed just one run on five hits with three walks and two strikeouts.

Justin Souza
Sport: Baseball
High school: Galt
Professional: West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx/Double AA Southern League/Seattle Mariners affiliate
Souza, a starting pitcher, picked up the win in a game last week against the Mobile Bears. He hurled 5 2/3 innings and allowed two runs on three hits with two walks and two strikeouts to lower his earned run average to 3.31 on the year. Souza has struck out 51 batters while allowing only 16 walks. He has won five games against six losses this season.

Jason Bartlett
Sport: Baseball
High school: St. Mary's
Professional: Tampa Bay Rays
Bartlett, the starting shortstop, went 6-for-21 overall at the plate last week with two doubles, four runs scored and four runs batted in. His batting average now stands at .364 this season.

Ryan Mattheus
Sport: Baseball
High school: Galt
Professional: Colorado Springs Sky Sox/Triple AAA Pacific Coast League/Colorado Rockies affiliate
Mattheus, a pitcher, was placed on the seven-day disabled list by the Sky Sox last week.

Charlie Van Sicklen
Sport: Golf
High school: Tokay
College: Pacific.
Van Sicklen, who will be a senior in the fall, was one of 22 Tigers in spring sports named to the All-Big West Academic team with a 3.27 grade point average.

David Cooper
Sport: Baseball
High school: Tokay
Professional: New Hampshire Fisher Cats/Double AA Eastern League/Toronto Blue Jays affiliate
Cooper, the starting first baseman/designated hitter, was activated after spending 15 days on the disabled list and went 2-for-4 in his first game back in a win over the Portland Sea Dogs last week to raise his batting average to .243 for the season.

Lisa Ferrero
Sport: Golf
High school: Lodi
Professional: Duramed Futures Tour
Ferrero carded rounds of 72-71-79 to finish with a 6-over-par 222 over 54 holes and tie for 31st place in the Horseshoe Casino Classic at the Lost Marsh Golf Course in Hammond, Indiana. She earned $763.00 this weekend.
