Tillie's is a wonderful Downtown restaurant

Tuesday, June 30, 2009 6:27 AM PDT

I love this "charming" town. I have lived my entire life here.

But this is a sad time everywhere; bad economy. I drove up and down Oak and Pine streets Downtown and all of School Street from Elm Street to Lodi Avenue. The number of vacant spaces tears you apart, but what percentage of Lodians support Downtown? Have any of you actually walked and stopped and looked at what is available for shopping or eating?

A bank teller told me about Tillie's, a restaurant on Pine Street, next door to the health food store. They had quite an interesting menu but I had the chicken and dumpling soup because the teller told be to go for it. It was positively super soup — big bowl with a roll.

The decor is so fascinating. It reminds me of a trattoria in Italy — some tables outside, counters inside and many tables. It is decorated with painted flowers everywhere, even on the upright piano. The food and service are excellent. Please go there.

Yes, money is tight, but you still must eat out once in a while. Or are you obligated to buy a birthday gift or graduation gift or just a gift for a friend? There are many charming shops for anything you would want.

Please take a stroll Downtown Lodi, and save Lodi — your town.

" Hate to burst your bubble Barbara Ray, but quite frankly there`s nothing downtown in the first place. With the exception of a couple of overpriced restaurant`s, bars and one of a kind shops that are way overpriced also that they have drove themsleves out of business. The rent is very high also. You say walk the downtown area, you better make it fast or the meter maid will be at your meter the second the red flag appears. Downtown should welcome WalMart since Wally will have to caugh-up thousands of dollars to keep downtown afloat. Downtown is almost like a ghost town now. Millions of dollars to improve it, I don`t see it unless you call all the pavers in the street that are out of alinement worth the price. The Hwy. 12 and Lower Sac. area has everything, even without a Super WalMart. "
