Where are our 50 mpg cars?

Tuesday, June 30, 2009 6:27 AM PDT

What happened to gas mileage?

In 1983, Volkswagen made a pickup diesel with a 6-foot bed. It was comfortable to ride in and got 40 miles to a gallon going uphill or down. And guess what? Government put a stop block on building them in the U.S. Why? Maybe because they were getting to much diesel per mileage.

Now, 25 years later, government says buy small cars that don't get good gas mileage. Where is 40 to 50 miles to the gallon?

" Where are the high mileage cars?? They are out there, a small few, but more
to come…Main problem, it’s the Moronic EPA and some backwards thinking environmentalist and lastly American Car manufactures that let
the Europeans beat us again. Diesel engines can now burn cleaner, have more power and superior mileage and longevity. Volkswagen has a car
for sale in the US now that get’s 54 mpg , they have a 3cyl not imported
yet that gets 74-77 mpg runs faster than most 4 cylinder cars and has less
emissions than a Toyota Prius… Even a Honda Civic can pull 40 plus mpg.
Americas bet hope is Gale Banks and Jay Leno together the have developed a powerful clean burning diesel from the Chevrolet Duramax. One of the keys is the change in fuel injection pressure from 3-5 PSI
to 35,000 PSI … It’s that old thinking outside the box routine and it’s a near
Impossibility for Americans anymore.. "

" Mr Neumann, the reason today's cars don't get as good of mileage is simple. It's all about horsepower. Look up the horsepower ratings on the cars in the early 80s vs. now. I had an 81 Toyota Celica that got around 40 mpg. It also had under 100 hp in their 22R engine. Even the new Honda Civic, as small as it is, has 140 horsepower. There's a direct trade off between mileage and power. The more you have, the less you get. "
