Murders down, suicides up in San Joaquin County
San Joaquin County had fewer murders in 2008 than in the past five years, but the number of suicides went up.
And Stockton had the greatest number of homicides last year, with 29 of the 46 murders in the county taking place in that city, according to the county Coroner's Office annual report released earlier this month. The cities of Lodi, Lathrop, Tracy and Manteca had one murder each, while another 13 murders took place in unincorporated San Joaquin County.
The 46 murders in 2008 are eight down from the previous year. The greatest number of homicides in the past five years was 61, in 2005.
However, San Joaquin County had 74 suicides in 2008, the highest in the past five years. Last year's total was 16 higher than 2007. The lowest number of suicides during the past five years was 54, in 2006.
The coroner's annual report, prepared by county Sheriff Steve Moore, contains a plentiful number of statistics about death and its causes.
