The U.S. should declare bankruptcy

Saturday, June 27, 2009 4:49 AM PDT

Perhaps I'm a dreamer, but what's wrong with a good dream?

I think that maybe the United States government should declare bankruptcy under one or the other chapters, or make up a new one. Wipe the slate clean. Start over debt-free and make a blood pact and promise to the American taxpayers that we will never put our country in debt again.

For over 50 years, I've lived on my income and saved a little money, too, for a rainy day.

Also, I would say that following the declaration of bankruptcy, there should be a recall of our jobs from China, Taiwan, Mexico, India and all the other cheap labor areas of this globe. We need our jobs here.

The end result of the economic difficulties in this country will result in what I see as social chaos that we haven't seen in our country since the Civil War.

Angry people are desperate people, eh what?

" Well Dogs I worked in the Line department 28 years Distribution and 6 in
Transmission…Local 1245 was as you say a joke.. The union took what the
Company let them have no more no less…I saw a contract go down twice
And the company said you pass it you can have your Retro Pay by Christmas. Bingo!! 1964 we worked 45 days daylight to dark rebuilding what the Christmas flood took down…Read the 3:25 post I believe you
Gas Rat’s fit in there…PG&E took excellent care of us and I’m enjoying
Every day of retirement…I would do it over in a heart beat not many will
Say that… "

" Gator, I would suggest you read your 1:34 post. I worked for PG&E for 33 years in Gas Construction before retiring, those holes didn`t dig themselves, and we worked on days like this. Local 1245 of the Electrical Workers Union was a joke. If it were not for PG&E and all their benifits I would still be working, no thanks to 1245. All the money in union dues I paid out and got nothing in return. And BTW it was just the UAW I was ragging on who were under worked and over paid and made GM jump through hoops when it was time for new contracts. "

" Larry Johnson: important: President FDR seized the gold.

Consequently ever since we are playing monopoly with fancy-colored paper things.

Since we don't have any money, it is impossible to pay our debts, and FDR's legacy public policy pays all of our debts for us.

Uhh... you don't know what I'm talking about, you say? Well, funny you think that, because I noticed the same thing.

I think some bankers pocketed the funds. "

" Larry Johnson: Interesting letter overall. You said to recall jobs from China, Taiwan, Mexico, India.

There's quite a bit of criminal activity happening in New York and Washington which caused our labor to go outside the borders. "

" Larry P. Johnson: In common law, there is no bankruptcy. (Please forgive me if I get this backwards, as I don't have much sleep and I shouldn't be typing.)

I say that because federal law allows for bankruptcy, and admiralty law must be federal.

I just got done arguing law with anthropis.

The biblical basis for admiralty permits everybody to wash their hands of sins and to start over, but only when someone sheds some blood. "

" Larry P. Johnson: I have surprising news for you.

The United States has been in bankruptcy since 1789, and not until 1999 has there been any possibility of it being paid, through 70 years of slavery.

What's 1999 - 70 years (allowed to nations for bankruptcy - don't ask me how I know that) and what happened in that year? "

" I should point out that people like Iron Workers, Miners Commercial fishermen, Most Linemen and it goes on in reality 95% of all construction
Workers , and a host of other physical workers give 110% and take pride
In the work they do…If you don’t like your Job, can’t give it your all and
take pride in what you do your in the wrong line of work…. "

" Gator, in both of our posts the word GREED like cream rises to the top. That was then and this is now, if this country is to compete, the UAW should become non-existent and I blame the costs you state in your post on them. Perhaps the folks at Government Motors should take a look down south where Honda`s and other foreign cars are made, far, far from the UAW and Detroit and learn how to make a great car at less cost. " GM workers builds cars for 75.00 plus an hour, Toyota builds cars for 40.00
Plus an hour and better cars to boot…2009 the best built Cars Honda and Subaru(Motor Trend and JD Powers)…We have a chance to recapture our
dominance in manufacturing, two things need to happen, we need to start
thinking outside the box and get people off their Lazy A** and learn how
to work like the greatest generation did…I’ve seen far to many people who
once they get their probationary period over they think the company owes them a living…There are exceptions as far as workers go but lazy greedy
non producers are the general rule.. "

" T&C, a great thought, but as you said it will never happen. Reason being, if a company can outsource a product and have it made for 10 cents an hour, and anywhere you go in this country the minuimun wadge is $8.00 an hour, no way could that company stay in business, they wouldn`t even try. That is why Outsourcing to other countries is here to stay. American greed along with high taxes and bad government rears it`s ulgy head, again.

Before declaring Bankruptcy, this country would have to have enough money coming in as to not allow this kind of recession to happen again, then perhaps the debt can be forgiven. People back to work and paying their taxes to keep the government going. I know tax is a dirty word and it`s not going to get any better or smaller. Give me strength to complain another day. "

" Good posts, T&C! Can't say what you said enough times! LOL!

Larry, GREAT letter! Either the U.S. declare bankruptcy or declare an equivalent of the Biblical Jubilee where EVERYONE is forgiven their debts....that would include us! "
