Fishing with Russ

At New Melones, the kokanee bite seems to have slowed a little for some and is still OK for others. The fish are in small pods and some of them are hanging on structure.

Watch your fish finder and try to work around these pods of fish for your best chances of limits. Use small Kokanee Bugs, Radical Glow Tubes and spinners behind a dodger. Bait all your lures with either shoepeg corn or use Berkley Imitation Maggots. Best depths are from 45 feet to as much as 85 feet and most areas of the main lake are holding fish. Good areas to try are the wall by Carson Cove, the west side of Glory Hole Point and the bay in front of and west of Peoria Cove (near the bottom).

Kokanee Power is hosting its annual derby this weekend at New Melones.

Trout and kokanee fishing has picked up a little at Pardee with the water stabilizing a bit and with warmer water temperatures. The kokanee are still small but becoming more plentiful. Fish the main lake near the entrance to the river arm and up river at 40 to 70 feet deep using mini hoochies in orange or pink with a glow head and pink or orange tiger spinners. Tip the lures with shoepeg corn or Berkley Imitation Maggots. The trout are hitting on 2 and 3-inch Fire Tiger grubs or small spoons in either red or red/white combination. Fish the dam area or up the river arm.

At Camanche, trout are still doing well (limits or near limits) using the Rapala F7 or F9 Hot Steel color or small spoons while trolling the narrows, around Big Hat Island and the face of the dam at 25 to 45 feet deep. Trolling in the area of Little Hat Island has produced both rainbow trout and kokanee. Bait fishermen are fishing in the slot by the spillway doing well on egg/crawler combination. Night fishermen fishing under lights are also doing well near the buoy line.

In the Delta, some reports of striped bass are coming in from the Rio Vista area for those trolling. Most fish are undersized with the occasional fish up to 8 pounds. You have to spend a lot of time searching and little time catching.
