19th annual High School Baseball-Softball Classic: Flames, Eagles team up vs. Tigers
As the top baseball players from 30 high schools across San Joaquin County and the Central Valley areas descend upon San Joaquin Delta College on Friday for the 19th annual High School All-Star Baseball Classic, a handful of local stars will be pitted against each other.
Lodi High seniors Mike Toon, Patrick Armstrong and Matt Clark will be teaming up with Elliot Christian seniors Mason Vickers and Stephen Lechner to play for the North team. They will take the field against two more local players — Tokay High seniors Bobby Raymos and Zach Costa.
"I think it should be fun to play with Matt and Mike and I know some of the guys from Tracy and some other teams and some of the guys on the other team," said Armstrong, who is playing with many of the local players on the Lodi American Legion senior team this summer. "I think it will be a fun, competitive game."
Armstrong, a third baseman for Lodi, led the Flames with a .447 batting average and 25 RBI this season. Toon was a top pitcher for Lodi and also had a .358 batting average. Clark hit . 301 with 24 RBI and eight doubles.
Mason Vickers, a first baseman, led the Eagles with a .375 batting average and 24 runs scored. Elliot third baseman Lechner hit .373 with 25 RBI and a team-high eight doubles.
Raymos, who is headed to the University of the Pacific to play baseball in the fall, is looking forward to going against some of the top talent in the area. He is playing with the NorCal Baseball team this summer, traveling around the country to try and touch up his game as much as possible before he joins Pacific in September. He is excited to play a little closer to home on Friday.
"It is going to be really fun," said Raymos, a star pitcher for Tokay who doesn't know if he will be pitching or playing in the outfield in the game. "It is basically just going out and having a good time and playing some good competition."
Raymos and Costa were both All-Tri-City Athletic League First-Team picks. Raymos hit .350 and went 3-2 with a 1.30 ERA on the mound. Costa, a first baseman, hit .360. Both Tigers hit grand slams in the 2009 season.
Both teams will have one or two practices this week to figure out their lineups before Friday's game. Opening Ceremonies for the baseball begin at 4:55 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults and kids 10 and under are free.
Proceeds for this year's benefit will go to the Recreational Sports Club of San Joaquin, San Joaquin County Boys & Girls Clubs, High School Sports Programs, and United Way of San Joaquin County.
