Bertha Schmitt

Bertha Schmitt, 97, of Santa Ana and formerly of Lodi, died May 29. She was born Bertha Bertsch on May 13, 1912, in Burt, N.D., and was one of 22 children.

Mrs. Schmitt lived for many years in Wishek, N.D., and La Habra before retiring to Lodi in 1971. In 2005, she moved to an assisted living home in Santa Ana. She married Jacob Schmitt, a North Dakota farmer, on Nov. 23, 1932. He died almost 10 years ago.

She is survived by her children, Loretta Blain, of Costa Mesa, Mary Ann Sheets-Hansen, of North Dakota, Larry Schmitt, of Washington, and David and Glenn Schmitt, both of Mission Viejo; sisters, Barbara Sanford, of Tracy, Regina Sommers, of Sacramento, Martha Lake, of the Sacramento area, Vi Prischmann, of North Dakota, and Freida Winterroth, of Washington; brothers, Hermann Bertsch, of North Dakota, Oscar Bertsch, of Sacramento, Herbert Bertsch, of Washington, Ted Bertsch, of Ukiah, Ben Bertsch, of South Dakota, and Rudy Bertsch, of Mississippi; of Taylor, S.D., Rudy of Jackson, Miss.; 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

A celebration of her life will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Lodi. A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Cherokee Memorial Park.

Visitation, for family only, will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesday at Cherokee Memorial Funeral Home in Lodi and from 4 to 8 p.m. for the public.
