Until recently, Lodi High senior Mallory Engelhardt didn't know Dominican University existed. Now she'll spend the next four years there continuing her education and soccer career.

Engelhardt recently accepted a scholarship offer to the school located in San Rafael, a small scenic city located north of San Francisco.

"I'd never heard of it until my competitive team was playing in a tourney in Davis a few months ago," said Engelhardt, who was also conceding Menlo College in the Bay Area and schools in Oregon and North Carolina.

The Dominican coach had come to the tournament to scout another player on the California Cougars, Engelhardt's competitive squad.

"He saw me and liked the way I played and talked to my coach," Engelhardt said. "We later talked and he wanted me to take a visit. I went for the first time three months ago and the place was so nice and pretty and I really liked the coaches and players."

And it was close to home, which is often a deciding factor when choosing a school.

"I want my parents to watch me play," Engelhardt said.

According to Engelhardt, they won't have to wait long.

The four-year starter at Lodi High who earned league MVP honors after leading the Flames to a championship and a playoff berth in her senior season said Dominican coaches expect the midfielder to start right away.

"The coach said they wouldn't have given me all that money otherwise," said Engelhardt, who scouted practices to make sure the level of competition was a good fit for her.

Dominican formerly competed in the NAIA but will make the transition to Division II this year. The Penguins, who went 13-2-3 overall and 10-0-2 in the California Pacific Conference last season, will now play in the Pacific West Conference.

"We play one team in Hawaii and that was definitely an enticement," Engelhardt said.

Engelhardt said she's not ready to declare a major but hopes to work in professional sports in some capacity.
