Fishing with Russ
Fishing for kokanee at New Melones is in the limelight this week. Limits for most are coming by 11 a.m. Fish are scattered all over the lake. Fish with spinners, (kokanee killer glow or hot pink glow), hoochies (pink/pearl) or apex (watermelon sparkle UV) and put them down 40 to 65 feet. Fish are averaging 13 to 14 inches.
At Pardee, fishing has turned on and the kokanee, averaging 12 inches, are the species chased the most. Best fishing is with mini hoochies, (orange or pink with a glow head) or spinners in hot pink. Some of the best spots are the buoy line, the mouth of the river and up the river arm to Columbia Gulch.
Trout fishing is fair using Needlefish (red with white slash) at 25 to 30 feet deep. Start as you leave the launch ramp and troll all the way out of the cove for good action. Bait fishermen on the bank are doing well with PowerEggs (white or pink and white) under a bobber at about 20 feet deep.
Several locals trolled Camanche week and found the fishing very good. Most fish were caught using Needlefish and Rapala and 30 to 40 feet deep seems to be the depth. Rainbows are averaging over 2 pounds.
Troll around Hat Island, Rabbit Creek and the dam. No reports came in on the bait fishing. Catfishing was good this past week as you can tell by the picture of Margie Morgan. A nice 16 1/4-pounder along with some others not pictured.
Delta fishing has been slowed a bit by the wind. Those getting out have had fair success trolling the mouth of the Old Sacramento and Steamboat Slough. Bait fishermen have done well at light 33A and 38 in the San Joaquin River and in front of Eddo's Harbor.
