Local motocross riders ready to fly high at Hangtown Classic
From seasoned veterans to adventurous newcomers, from former jet ski racers to BMX riders, from the healthy to the injured, the Lodi area will be well represented when the 41st Annual Hangtown Motocross Classic roars into action this week at Hangtown MX Park, located at the Prairie Recreation Area east of Sacramento.
T.J. Bettenhausen will be riding with a broken collarbone and David Croce with cracked ribs. Logan Mayfield is racing again after a frightening accident at the same track led him to take a two-year hiatus from the sport.
Blake Jump expects to do well because he's in the best shape of his life, thanks to the spin classes at the local gym. His father, Steve, a former professional who was once ranked No. 2 in Northern California, now enjoys the atmosphere and camaraderie as much as the competition.
Troy Cardiel, another former professional, placed third in the amateur division last year but is ready to test his mettle against the pros once again.
Brent Workman, a former jet ski professional, is looking to prove he can handle a bike, too.
All will be in action this weekend.
Amateur riders will race on Thursday and Friday, with races starting about 8:30 a.m. and lasting to about 3 p.m.
On Saturday, the professionals will hit the track in one of the most prestigious motocross events in the nation. More than 100 riders will be soaring three stories high and over 70 feet in length in one of the most grueling test of stamina, skill and speed.
The AMA Motocross Championship Series race will be televised nationally on SPEED.
Gates open at 6 a.m. on Sunday and opening ceremonies begin at 12:30 p.m. Tickets are $40 for adults, $20 for children ages 6-11 and free for children 5 and under; parking is $5. Tickets include morning access to the pro pits.
Hangtown is located about 20 miles east of Sacramento off of Highway 50.
