Lodi resident puts up sign to tell drivers to pay attention

"Hit a cat, I'll hit your kid."

After one of Tina Teixeira's cats was killed in the bike lane Friday morning, she had enough of cars speeding past her West Elm Street house near Mills Avenue.

Update: Sign changed

She wrote the words in big black letters on white posterboard and stuck the sign to a tree in the hopes that it will get people to slow down.

For Teixeira, the loss of her cat is as painful as losing a child.

"People fly down this street and they don't care," Teixeira said. "You don't want me to kill your kids, don't kill mine."

People have hit three of Teixeira's cats in the past month, and she pointed out her mom's dented truck from an accident in front of her house.

Teixeira takes in abandoned cats people leave on her doorstep and will spay or neuter them before letting them roam outside. She has seven cats currently. She said she also feeds snails every day in her yard and leaves food out for raccoons in the evening.

Friday morning, Teixeira was in her front yard when she heard a car accelerate quickly around the corner. She heard a thump and saw the car speed off. One of her cats was dead.

"I don't come to your neighborhood and do this stuff," Teixeira said. "It's Lodi, for God's sake. It's not Stockton. It's not East L.A."

Tina Teixeira explains why she put up a sign that reads "Hit a cat, I'll hit your kid," at her home on West Elm Street in Lodi. (Brian Feulner/News-Sentinel)

While standing in the bike lane, she pointed to the spot her cat was laying near her mom's truck. She said the car had to swerve into the bike lane to hit the cat.

At 2:30 on Friday afternoon, the four-way stop at the intersection had three or four cars waiting on each side. Kids crowded on the corner waiting to cross, and parents lined the street waiting to pick up their children.

Some parents were not surprised about the sign because they have had previous run-ins with Teixeira. Five parents said that while waiting for their children after school, they have had Teixeira yell at them about parking on the street or at their children for stepping on her lawn. They all declined to give their names for publication because they were worried about future run-ins with her.

"I saw that dead cat this morning, and I thought, 'What is she going to be doing after school?'" one of the women said.

Children and parents also stopped to read Teixeira's sign posted in the yard. Dan Sroufe waited for his daughter in his SUV at the corner.

"I can understand living close to the school and having a lot of traffic," Sroufe said. "But it seems a little over the top."

Teixeira said she knows some people might take the sign the wrong way.

"I don't mean to offend anyone, but I don't see anyone apologizing for the loss of my animal," she said.

While waiting for the Grapevine bus, Carmen Quiroz, a teaching assistant at Millswood Middle School, said the intersection is busy because her school, Lodi High School, Erma B. Reese Elementary School and the General Mills factory all have shifts ending at the same time.

"Some of those parents know better and can pick up their kids somewhere else," Quiroz said.

She suggested that parents meet children on Locust or Lockeford streets to avoid some of the traffic.

Traffic is always an issue, said Kathleen Hambrick Whisler, vice-principal at Millswood. At the beginning of the school year, officials met with parents to point out places where they can park, Whisler said. They encourage parents to pick up the students at the Mills and Elm intersection because it makes the school's parking lot less crowded.

They also gave parents guidelines on the best routes to take to improve traffic flows, and the crossing guards for the elementary schools will also stop traffic for the middle schoolers.

While Whisler had not seen the sign, she said the school has received complaints from Teixeira about the children's noise level at recess.

The school's resource officer, Jim Landis, has spoken with her before, but did not return a call to his Lodi Police Department office Friday.

Lt. Virgil Monroe said he did not know of any complaints about the sign that the department had received.

While there are certain parts of the law that makes threats illegal, he does not think the sign would qualify because it is a generic threat.

For Teixeira, it's not just the traffic that upset her. She wishes someone would have stopped to apologize for hitting her cat.

"The only thing I've ever hit is a skunk, and I got out to check to see if it was OK and it sprayed me," she said.

" I love animals, got a yard full of the critters. I love kids more. While I can understand the sadness of losing a pet, killing or striking a child in retribution is criminal. The offensive sign represents unthinking ignorance. I hope the City and the citizens of Lodi stand firmly against this type of public display. "

" I agree that children are far more precious than a pet and feel if you have more than a couple cats then you may have mental issues anyway. If your cats can't be kept on a leash when outside then please keep them inside so the rest of the neighbors don't have to put up with the mess they cause to our properties. Leash laws are there for a reason whether pet owners like it or not and I am one of those homeowners who hate all the neighborhood cats because of the damage they have done to our house and yard! "

I have experienced a cat being hit by a reckless driver, which indeed was a painful experience, but never would I threaten a child over it. Come on, lady...get real. As much as I love my animals and consider them family, I definitely put my children and the children of others on a higher level.
And one more thing...who on earth actually puts a leash on their cat?
I dont know about you, but my cat wouldn't have it! "

If she lives on a busy street the cat should BE KEPT INSIDE 24/7. I have cats, in my house, my house is clean, doesn't wreak of cat urine and I get many compliments on what a resposible pet owner I am.

All I can say to this lady is what I have posted at the top of my compter and told EVERY cat-owner during my 30 year marriage to a veterinarian is:

AN INSIDE CAT IS A SAFE CAT.

So if she's so worried about her cats, keep them indoors and take down the sign. "

After "outing" her neighbor as she did along with her disturbing remarks on these blogs, I'm hopeful that the folks at the County Hospital have been preparing a padded room for her. What will happen to her cats then while she's under observation? At least the neighborhood kids will be safe, if only for awhile. "

Apparently, you seem to think that you should be excluded from these two laws because you are “helping” these cats. If indeed you wish to help, might I suggest that you connect with the local Humane Society Shelter. These Shelters typically spay and neuter the animals they receive and adopt them out to families, usually after a rigorous screening (trust me, when I adopted my two dogs from the local shelter it was like I was adopting children). Your local shelter in Lodi is the Animal Friends Connection Humane Society located at 933 S. Cherokee Lane. Their website is http://www.animalfriendsconnect.org and by the looks of it, they are in DESPARATE need of volunteers. You obviously have a love and strong desire to help these animals, so with the time and money you spend feeding and spaying/neutering the cats you have rescued, imagine what you can accomplish under an organized group such as this. continued... Sorry, I reread the article and don't see your neighbor's name there anywhere. You only mention their name with contempt because you either don't like them or don't like that they have dogs. And you didn't say anything about breeding pit's as irresponsible only that "Like we need more dogs". Apparently we do because the cost of well breed dogs is still in the hundreds and is a good side business for responsible owners.

And yes, I do spay and neuter all my animals and adopt them from shelters.

Considering you posted as sign saying you would hit a kid if your cat was hit then claim it was not a threat I would suggest you look at your extreme hostile outlook on life and try to figure out why you would make such an obviously hostile statement to begin with. And then why you are so openly hostile against people whose kids you threatened in the first place. "

If you want to make a change, don't berate her on this message post; jump into action so that these poor animals can no longer be abused or killed by this woman's neglect. I am highly surprised the Lodi police didn't jump on this on their own; what do they do all day over there in Lodi - watch snails race? But, anyway, make me proud - I want to see your results on CNN Headline news! "

Long been time to put cats on leashes, their feces carry millions of parasites that survive for months (T.gondii ) risk infecting pregnant women causing fatal effects on their unborn child.
“Pregnant women infected with the parasite can pass it on to their developing babies, increasing the chance of an abortion or miscarriage. If a baby survives, it could have severe brain damage that may or may not be evident at birth.”
When, and they do, from freshwater run-off from back yards and streets those parasite eggs make it to underground water, infect water ways, reach the oceans, harming marine animals. Too often I see neighbors cat poop outside on my yards! How many times, not seeing it, do people step on it bringing it inside homes because cats are allowed to roam around!! What are Lodi’s laws? It is very annoying to say the least, to go out into my vegetable garden and have to clean up some cat's poop. The neighborhood cats enjoy sleeping on my lawn furniture as well. I guess it's more comfortable than theirs?? Sadly, I have seen driver's deliberately try and hit animals that are in the street. Just like they deliberately try to hit people in the crosswalk, like what happened to us last night at Elm & Crescent. We were crossing with our grandbaby in the stroller when a driver in a white truck with blacked out windows deliberately and intentionally sped up as we were half way across the intersection. I put out my hand to motion to 'him' to slow down just on the chance that 'he' didn't see us, but 'he' intentionally sped up. My husband literally had to run with the stroller to get out of the way. He wasn't even to the sidewalk when the truck sped by. What would make a human being do that? Stupidity I guess. "

It's very sad to lose a pet, but to put a pet on the same level as a human is unbelievable to me. If there was a dog or cat in the road and it was unavoidable to hit it, and it was either my life or the animal's, I would have to say it would be the life of the animal. My life and my family's lives are much more valuable and prescious than that of a pet. As for Tina, if she truly valued the lives of her pets, then she would never have let them outside to begin with on a busy street. The fact that the street is busy is a given "duh", and wisdom would, and should, dictate what the pet owner should do, and that is keep the pet indoors. It's not only the law, it's much more than that. It's common sense do so so. "

The notion that the killing of an animal is tantamount to murder, as one contributor has suggested is nonsense. Only human beings can be murdered. Pets are property. That doesn't mean they don't occupy a special place in our lives and hearts, because they certainly do. Yet, in a society that has come to accept the killing of unborn children as inconsequential as taking the garbage to the street it's no wonder there are people like Tina Teixeira believing that she would be justified in taking out a kid in retribution for a killed pet (accidentally or otherwise). Where have our values gone? "

" While her pain is understandable, (I am one of those "kooks" who love their pets like the children I am unable to have) but since she lives on a busy street - and has already had cats hit by cars - keep the cats INDOORS! "

" Yes, i agree with that much, Patricia. She should not let the cats roam free but people should not be speeding by either. People who actually swerve to hit the animal should be arrested for murder, IMHO. "

" She is not a kook. Her feelings are real. I don't understand how anyone can think an animal is "just an animal." Animals are more loving than most kids, that is for sure. "

" This person is a kook. She has already changed the sign to read "I watch you kids...you watch mine" with paw prints tailing off. When has it been acceptable to value the life of a human equal to that of a pet? Certifiable kook! "
