Midtown Taqueria wins fans with soccer, chili rellenos

They've got margaritas and horchata. Flautas and chili relleno. Chips and all sorts of salsas. Midtown Taqueria, the new restaurant on Kettleman Lane, has everything you want when you're in the mood for Mexican food.

The ambiance is comfortable and fun, something manager Flora Salcedo says the customers enjoy. In the location where Cheezer's Pizza used to be, the taqueria is lined with windows on two sides. Inside, the paint is fresh and bright, and with over 20 tables and booths, there is room for groups large and small.

When you order at the counter, your food is cooked fresh. Choose from a large menu that includes authentic Mexican favorites, such as tacos, quesadillas, burritos, tostadas, specialty plates and seafood dishes.

The original Midtown Taqueria is still located in Midtown Sacramento, where it is a hot spot during soccer games. A second restaurant was opened in Lodi because Lodi locals love Mexican food.

"I think Lodi is a small town and there are a lot of people who like Mexican food," she said.

Lodi's restaurant has the same fun atmosphere. Salcedo says soccer is also shown daily at the Lodi location and is a big draw for Lodi fans.

Midtown Taqueria is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week.

For around $5, you can get a breakfast of scrambled eggs with your choice of ham, sausage or bacon, as well as machaca (scrambled eggs with beef, tomato, onion , jalapeno and red salsa), a Spanish omelet (ham, onion, bell pepper) a vegetarian burrito or breakfast burrito.

The most popular item, and Salcedo's favorite, is chile rellenos. Salcedo says she loves the spiciness and cheesiness of the dish.

Chili rellenos are one of the specialty plates. Other specialty dishes include carne asada, steak ranchero, flautas, enchiladas, tamales and a combination plate of shrimp with steak, chicken or pork.

There are many seafood dishes, from spicy prawns to seafood quesadillas and shrimp or octopus cocktail.

On a recent visit, I enjoyed a chicken chimichanga. It was larger than I expected, and topped with sour cream and guacamole. Brian Feulner ordered pork flautas. Four pork-filled flautus, rice and beans covered his plate.

We both agreed we got a lot of food for the price.

We couldn't leave without sharing flan homemade by Salcedo herself.

"It's my recipe," she said, after we told her it was easily the best flan either of us had ever had.
