Lodi winery workers rescue injured hawk
News-Sentinel Staff Writer
A Cooper's hawk in need of a little medical care found help from workers at Jessie's Grove Winery.
Brenda Mayer found the bird while working at the Lodi winery last month.
Mayer, along with other employees at the winery, called Dr. Richard Turner, DVM, at Arbor Pet Clinic. Mayer often found injured blue jays when she was a girl and take them to Turner, who is known for taking in wild animals.
Turner instructed Mayer to put on gloves and wrap the hawk in a towel. The winery workers then placed it in a box until they could get it to the doctor.
Mayer brought the hawk to Dr. Turner's office, where three of the bird's toes had to be removed due to necrotic cellulitis, caused by a toe trauma.
Turner held the hawk, clenched by its legs, while it was still asleep after the successful operation.

"How ya doin', big boy? Wake up, wake up, baby," said Turner.
The hawk, with a tube down its throat to prevent choking, started to swallow. Its eyes began to blink and it awoke. The hawk was taken from the operating room and transferred to the Sacramento Wildlife Care Association for follow up care.
