Athlete of the Week
Elliot freshman Kathryn Liu jumping out to winning beginning
Accomplishment: Elliot Christian freshman Kathryn Liu made quite a debut in her first Harvest Christian League championship track and field meet last week, winning three individual events and running a leg of the Eagles' winning 4X400 relay to help the Elliot girls win their seventh-straight HCL crown.
Liu, who has done ballet for eight years and is competing for the first time in track and field this year, swept the HCL jumping events. She won the triple jump and long jump with personal-best marks of 26 feet, 51/2 inches and 13 feet, 71/2 inches respectively. She won the high jump by clearing the bar at 4 feet, but her PR in the event is 4-6.
Outside of being new to the sport, Liu's victories were also impressive as she was sick last week when she was competing. Liu will now advance to the Division III meet on May 19 and 21 at Modesto Junior College.
Family: Parents Maurice and Karen, one brother and one sister.
Favorite sport: "I used to do ballet and this is my first year doing sports and I played basketball and am doing track and field," Liu said. "I like both basketball and track and field. It is so much fun. My brother (15-year-old Chris) and my sister (17-year-old Kaitlyn) are also doing track and field with me and it is the first time we have all done something together.
Favorite hobbies: "I do still ballet and tap," she said. "I have done ballet for eight years."
Favorite subject: "I like doing ASL (American Sign Language) for my language class and I like my Bible class and math," Liu said.
Food you won't eat: Mushrooms.
Would like to meet: "I think it would be really cool to meet Jesus," Liu said.
Favorite internet site: "I don't really use the Internet that much," she said.
Crowning achievement: "I am really proud that I keep my grades up and play sports," she said.
Favorite music: "I like Christian music," she said. "I like listening to the "Newsboys" and Chris Tomlin."
Plans: "I have decided yet," she said.
The Athlete of the Week is selected by the News-Sentinel sports staff. Nominations are gladly accepted. Liu will receive a T-shirt courtesy of Lodi Sporting Goods for being selected.
