From Clinton to Bush to Obama, I'm disappointed in our presidents

Tuesday, May 5, 2009 6:33 AM PDT

Sometimes, I can't help but be disappointed in the American government.

This goes back to Bill Clinton's fling. It was the first time my young mind realized that the president of the United States — the person that is the upstanding representative of our country to the world — lied to the people that put their trust in him.

The position I was taught to respect and honor in school gave me no reason to do so after spitting on my trust.

From Clinton to George W. Bush, I watched and listened more.

Secrets, lots and lots of secrets. Bush Jr. contradicted himself when he said he was trying to make America safer after 9/11 and needed more power to do it, only to allow millions of people into the country, unscreened and undocumented through our borders.

He used fear to get what he wanted and never held up his end of the bargain. He said he'd do "everything" in his power to secure our country. Lies.

He began the bailout program for big business in America, something that never should have been done. W and the GOP spent us into debt, but kept the bailouts moving.

Barack Obama promised change and transformation, but teamed up with the yes-donkeys to continue outrageous spending, and helped send America into trillions worth of debt. And the bailouts? Why not just hand over America's treasury to the private sector? That'll help them, too.

More lies of change.

How is my generation supposed to become the future of this country if these fine role models are our examples?

Companies "too big to fail" continue to be handed checks with endless zeros while honest citizens too small to care about lose their jobs and struggle trying to make ends meet.

This past week I noticed an increase in panhandling everywhere I went — the bank, the coffee shop and even the gas station. But what was the difference? Many of these people seemed as if they had never asked for a handout before.

It was obvious. Typically I'll be approached by a filthy man with ripped clothing that smells of urine, asking for spare change to buy a beer. But lately, those approaching me are at the end of their rope.

Dressed in slacks and a polo shirt, desperation in their eyes, middle-aged men have walked up to me with their pride in their wallet.

"Hey, buddy, I hate asking, but I just lost my job and my cards are maxed out. Do you have any extra so I can fill my tank?" one man asked last Thursday night. "If you don't, I understand, and sorry to bother you," the man withered as he glanced at his blue Toyota Camry.

Later at the coffee house, I noticed a new face behind the counter. "What can I get started for you?" the elderly man asked. I placed my order and inquired if the man, with a name tag that read "Carl," was new to the business. "Oh, yeah," he said with a sigh, "I was supposed to retire in January, but my 401K melted to nothing after last year. So I couldn't afford to settle down."

I offered my apologies when Carl interrupted, "I don't need pity. I worked for every dime for 45 years straight. I'll retire some day."

Carl looked like he was in his late 60s. I can only hope for his sake that "someday" is soon.

How do our leaders — I'm talking senators, congresspeople, governors and even our president — justify handing out billions in taxpayer money to private companies that failed to pay the bills while people like Carl and the man at the gas station, who have worked their tails off in the most honest of ways possible, swallow their pride and start all over?

On the flip side, I'd like to extend a handshake to those of you running successful companies that flourish and achieve great things.

I hope you're never in need of something, because as I've been taught, it's those that cheat and fail the worst that get rewarded.

Political parties aside, I say again, I'm disappointed in the American government.

So I really can truthfully say that the Proposition 8 and gay marriage issue does not affect me.

However, on the issue of artifical insemination of lesbians, and gay parent adoption of children, in this case, the child does not give consent to being created under lesbian parents or being adopted into gay parents. I think this is a problem, but still, I don't vote on the issue. "

If you are able to act so offensive to other people without using any alcohol, I would say that is truly amazing.

Normal people don’t answer to alcohol questions.

Why are you so sensitive to this discussion? "

I might threaten to publish a letter-to-the-editor in Phoenix, Arizona just because of you, and I have done that, but I won't call you names of profanity, and I won’t go to Phoenix. A good letter is a contribution to society. I don’t think it helped you though.

I travelled through Texas, once, and while I was in the airport, I made a joke about Leonard not being in there with his laptop; but, I didn’t threaten to go all over Texas looking for Leonard. "

I wrote two letters illustrating the difference between statutory "marriage," which is manifested as a financial contract with a bond that is otherwise known as a marriage certificate, and sacramental marriage under God. "

Affirmative Action and Gay Marriage
by Thomas Sowell

The politically clever way to get special privileges is to call them "rights"-- especially "equal rights."

Some local election campaigns in various states are using that tactic this year, trying to get special privileges through affirmative action quotas or through demands that the definition of marriage be changed to suit homosexuals. "

Brian wrote on May 18, 2009 8:01 AM:

It is clearly a fact that marriage is a privilege. Sorry to hear you agree with Lodian that a bunch of faggots should be able to redefine marriage. I find it dispicible. Also, 80% percent of the Black community in CA that voted for Obama also voted to keep marriage between a man and a woman. Put that in your pipe and smoke it. "

" Wade, the problem with your generation is that you let others do your thinking for you. You’re not seeing a new shift in clientele – the panhandlers are the same as always. What you’re seeing is a change in markets. Panhandling is a business. Homeless people have a routine, and they know (from day to day) where to sleep, where to beg, and where to find food. Certain restaurants have tasty discards on weekends, homeless shelters may have free meals every Sunday, begging is good during the Friday lunch hour in the business district, etc. As such, they typically stay close to “home” so that they can maintain their routine. What you’re seeing is that people are eating out less, and donations are slimmer at the food banks and shelters. These and other “market forces” are forcing them to expand their boundaries and encroach in areas you frequent, whereas you avoided their turf in the past. Most of them do this to avoid real work; they’d need serious adjustments in physical appearance, rehab, and attitude, before they can contribute again to society. They’re the same problem, just in your neighborhood. "

Lying is practically a prerequisite for political office; this goes way, way back, long before Bill Clinton. That doesn't make it right, but let's not be excessively gullible here. The real problem is that as far as our so-called leaders are concerned, the rule of law simply doesn't apply to them. That needs to change.

Mr. Heath asks how his generation is supposed to become the future of this country if these fine role models are his examples. Simple, don't emulate them! What, at your tender age you don't know the difference between right and wrong; simply because these reprobates lead our nation now, you must subscribe to their idea of governing? Learn from them, Wade! Is that really so difficult a concept for anyone to grasp?
