Student receives critical language scholarship

David Azevedo, of Lodi, who is attending Loyola Marymount University, was awarded a U.S. Department of State Critical Language Scholarship to study Arabic in Tunisia during the summer.

The program began in 2006 as a way to increase opportunities for American students to study critical-need languages overseas.

This year, more than 500 scholarships will be given to undergraduate and graduate students who are studying Arabic, Indic languages, Turkic languages, Chinese, Korean, Persian and Russian. Students will spend seven to 10 weeks in intensive language institutes over the summer in 12 countries where the languages are spoken.

Participants are expected to continue their language study beyond the scholarship period and apply their critical language skills in their future professional careers.

The program recieved more than 5,400 applications. Recipients were selected through a merit-based selection process.

Azevedo is a 2007 graduate of St. Mary's High School. He is the son of Tom and Shelly Azevedo, of Lodi.
