Fishing with Russ

Thursday, May 7, 2009 6:16 AM PDT

Striped bass fishing in the Delta has continued to be good for most areas although the fish are scattered a little and the weather being unsettled kept some of the fishermen off the water.

The deep water channel above Cache Slough has been very productive this past week using either shallow or deep diving Yozuri lures.

Best colors have been the Clown, Chartreuse and Red Head and White.

On the San Joaquin side of the Delta striped bass trolling has been good in the south fork of the Mokelumne River, Georgiana Slough and the mouth of Potato Slough. There are also good reports from Three Mile Slough to Prisoner Point.

Lake Berryessa is still the hot spot for trout and big kokanee although the weather seems to have slowed the bite a little. Improving weather this week will bring the bite back. Big Island and Skiers Cove are two of the areas that are giving up large numbers and good size fish.

Apex, Hoochies and Radical Glow tube baits are the best and pink has been the best color. Best depth is 25 to 40 feet.

Kokanee fishing is very good at New Melones Reservoir. The fish are still on the small side but on a very good bite. Best lures to use are the mini hoochie, (pink with glow head) Radical Glow tube (pink glow) or the red hoochie wiggler with the pink and pearl hoochie. Best trolling areas are Glory Hole point, the Spillway, 49 Bridge and the dam. Fish are from 18 to 40 feet deep.

Pardee has remained a little slow for both trout and kokanee but improving on the troll. Best depth seems to be 5 to 15 feet for the rainbows and 35 to 40 feet for the kokanee. Hot Pink Glow, Hot Tiger Glow and Hot Orange Glow spinners or mini hoochies in the pink or orange with a glow head is doing best.

Best areas seem to be the river mouth up to Twin Coves, the spillway and the south cove. Bank fishing is still good in the marina cove using Wooly Buggers under a bobber, casting spoons or bait fishing with PowerBait.

Camanche fishing on the troll is still good for those using Rapala in the Hot Steel, Orange Gold, or Fire Tiger and trolling 5 to 20 feet deep. Robbie Dunham and Joe Askamit caught 25 fish and three of them were over 4 pounds in a derby last week. Troll at about three miles per hour and fish from the narrows to the dam.
