Fishing with Russ

The Camanche is still good for trollers and bait fishing.

Troll from the narrows to the dam with Rapala F7 or F9 in the Hot Steel, Orange Gold or Black Gold colors or No. 2 or No. 3 needle fish, Excel or needle finish in red and white. Troll at 2 1/2 to 3 miles per hourat 12 to 25 feet deep. Bait fishing near the spillway has also given up some very good limits of fish. Tryston Dewalt of Lodi caught a 6 1/4-pound Rainbow on a worm near the dam bait fishing. Those fishing on the bank should fish in the main body of the lakecasting into 10 to 20 feet of water. Crappie fishing has been very good for large 1 1/4 to 1 1/2-pound fish. Use live minnows or crappie jigsaround the underwater trees or brush. The Rabbit Creek area is one of the good areas to try.

Melones has produced a very good number of Kokanee this past week and the fish have now moved down into the make body of the lake. Limits of fish are the rule now. Fish are small (10 to 13 inches) and are 30 to 50 feet deep. Best lures seem to be spinners, Kokanee bugs and hoochies (pink or orange) fished behind your favorite dodger. Best fishing has been in front of the spillway, dam, in the mouth of Angel Creek and off Glory Hole Point.

Pardee bank fishermen are still doing just OK with the planted trout in the marina cove. Best bait is powerbait in garlic flavor. Trollers are still struggling for trout and Kokanee.

Berryessa has the hottest fishing in the whole valley. Trout, Salmon and Kokanee are on a great bite with limits on some boats in a matter 1 hour or less. Spinners, Hoochies and Apex in pink or red have been the colors of choice for many for the Kokanee. Trout and Salmonare being caught while fishing for the Kokanee trolling from 15 to 45 feet deep. The best lure for the Salmon has been the white shad tube bait by Radical Glow. The big Island area is one of the favorites. The Kokanee are 14 to over 17 inches and are very heavy for their length.

Delta Striped Bass fishing has went from good to great in the past few days. Two derbies were held last weekend and there were multiple limits caught on nearly every boat. Both the Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers have been red hot as well as the Old Sacramento River above Isleton. Fish to over 17 pounds were caught in the Central Valley Angler derby and the lures of choice were Bomber, Yozuri and Rebel. The colors varied but white/red head, chartreuse and clown were the choice of most. Sturgeon fishing is very good in the Liberty Island area. Cal Hieb and Larry Rayburn caught and released 17 in 23 hours of fishing this past weekend in Prospect Slough on ghost and grass shrimp.
