Lodi gymnast Michael Bettencourt headed to national championships

Accomplishment: Michael Bettencourt, a 17-year-old gymnast who trains at Impact Sports Center in Lodi, recently earned a berth in the national championships with a strong performance at a regional qualifier in Phoenix.

Bettencourt competed in the floor routine, vault, pommel horse, high bars, parallel bars and rings, finished with an all-around score of 77.4, bettering the qualifying mark of 76.5 needed to qualify for nationals, which will be held in Cincinnati on May 7.

It's the first time that Bettencourt, who competes in the 16-18 age division and has been involved in gymnastics since he was 10 years old, has qualified for the national event.

Bettencourt is a junior at Lodi High.

Family: Nick and Karen Bettencourt, parents; two sisters.

Favorite sport: Gymnastics. "It's a challenge and I get bored easy. I've tried to stop gymnastics before and I can't. I have to do it every day."

Favorite athlete: U.S. gymnast David Sender, who was bound for the 2008 Olympics before being injured at the U.S. trials.

"He's pretty much the best," Bettencourt said.

Favorite hobbies: Wakeboarding. Bettencourt wakeboards with his parents in the Delta and with his cousin at Lake Hogan.

Favorite class: Art. "It's the easiest one," said Bettencourt, who added "My mom thinks I'm good at it."

Favorite food: Mexican, especially enchiladas.

Latest music downloads: Hits by bands Bury Your Dead and Have Heart.

Crowning achievement: Qualifying for nationals.

Plans: Bettencourt hopes to earn gymnastics scholarship.
