Teen drowns in Mokelumne River
A 16-year-old boy from Valley Springs drowned in the Mokelumne River Sunday evening in the area of Stillman Magee Regional Park in Clements, according to Clements Fire Chief Dave Ingrum.
Cody Ray Scanlon, who had been rafting with friends since about 1 p.m., slipped away from his tube or floatation device, according to Deputy Coroner Gary Yip. His body was found at 7:43 p.m., only 10 feet from where he was last seen, Yip said. He was found about a quarter-mile upstream from Stillman Magee Park on Mackville Road, according to Ingrum.
Scanlon was taken to Lodi Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Yip said.
Acampo resident Alan McIssac, who writes a blog about the Mokelumne River was at Lodi Memorial Hospital the night of the accident.
"Fire rescue (was) still performing chest compressions (when they) brought him into Lodi Memorial Hospital. It was a chilling scene," he said.
McIssac called the accident a tragedy, especially in light of how floatation devices cost only about $12.
Clements and Mokelumne firefighters, the Stockton dive team spent about 90 minutes looking for the boy, Ingrum said, and a REACH helicopter did an overhead search of the river.
The victim was reportedly rafting in the river in an inner tube, although Ingrum said he didn't see one in the water. The victim was not wearing a life jacket, Ingrum said.
