Angler Action
Fishing with Russ
Special to the News-Sentinel
Delta striped bass fishing has been fair to good this past week. Good numbers of fish have come for the trollers on the west bank of the Sacramento River below Rio Vista, the old dairy and in the Old Sacramento River above Isleton.
Yozuri lures (both shallow and deep divers) in chartreuse, white/red head and clown have done the job for most. Bomber shallow divers are also working well.
Bait fishermen are doing well when they can find fresh shad near Decker Island and the power lines. Sturgeon fishing was good for Larry Rayburn this past weekend (pictured). He caught one oversize and released it near Broad Slough.
Pardee Reservoir bait fishermen are still doing well in all the coves using PowerBait or large red worms. Trollers are doing well using Ex-Cell and R-Lures in the watermelon, frog and fire tiger colors. The best trolling area is the mouth of the river to Columbia Gulch and at about 25 feet deep.
Kokanee are still small and in short supply. The first day or two after the planting use Magic Bullet, Kastmasters or Krokodile lures in the north arm near the boat launch of the lake for some hot action.
Trollers on Lake Camanche had some on and off days this past week but Ken Johnson and his fishing partner of Lodi caught a couple of limits and three nice big fish ranging from 6 to 11 pounds using No. 2 Needle Fish in the frog pattern. They were fishing between Little Hat and Big Hat Islands at about 20 to 25 feet deep.
Bank fishermen should also try Rancho Seco for some good trout fishing using PowerBait or trout worms by Berkley. Most areas of the lake are accessible and the quality of the fish is very good.
New Melones fishermen are finding more kokanee now from just above the 49er bridge up to Horseshoe Bend and in the Coyote Creek arm. Fish at 15 to 20 feet deep using a dodger and a spinner tipped with shoepeg corn or a small piece of worm. Look for the fish to move into the main part of the lake very soon.
