We need more people like Lt. Carillo

Thursday, April 9, 2009 6:51 AM PDT

Kudos to Lt. Steve Carillo. In a day and age where so many people believe that animals can be a disposable commodity, it was so wonderful to hear the story of Lt. Carillo saving the life of a dog who was caught in a car door and trying desperately to keep up with the vehicle.

Gandhi said that we could judge a society by the way they treat their animals. We need more people like Lt. Carillo.

" This LT. is truely one of lodi PD'S greatest!
Besides the fact that these men and women keep us all safe and put their lives on the line ON A DAILY BASIS, This one has one of the most important skills in my opinion , and that is COMPASSION this is not a skill that can be taught.
This is a gift, and lucky for the little dog he was around that day.
I love my dogs and they are part of our Family.
I would be devistated if this had happened to one of my dogs!
Thank you LPD! "

" Our police officers do other very important things in our community, but do not belittle the importance of saving a dog's life. "

" I'd consider a policeman who stops someone from selling high school students a bag of meth, to be doing something more important. But that's just me I guess. "

" I would like to believe most people witnessing a little dog being dragged to its death would do whatever they could to get the attention of the drivers to stop. It was indeed fortunate that this fine police officer was on the scene; he had the advantage of a very fast car, flashing lights and a siren to alert the owners of this poor pup that disaster was looming. Being an avid dog-lover myself, I would have pretended that I was an officer of the law, absent the necessary emergency equipment of course. It behooves all of us to not only be very careful with our own pets, but to be on the lookout for mistakes such as this one that could have ended very badly. "
