Lodi Flames denied payback as Lincoln Trojans win SJAA girls soccer opener

After Lincoln not only erased Lodi’s hopes of winning the San Joaquin Athletic Association title last year, but also kept the Flames out of the playoffs, the Flames were looking for some payback when the two teams faced each other on Tuesday.

Lincoln senior Tailer Jones made sure that didn’t happen however, scoring three goals and leading the Trojans to a 3-1 victory at Spanos Stadium in a game that opened up SJAA play for both teams.

“I am really happy with how they played,” said Lincoln head coach Jeff Coane. “They are a young team and they are really stepping up.”

Lincoln defeated Lodi 2-0 in the regular-season finale last year, dropping the Flames to third place in the SJAA while the Trojans and Tracy advanced to the postseason and Lodi’s season was finished.

On Tuesday, the Flames got off on the wrong foot with an accidental hand ball at their 35-yard line 2:48 into the contest. Jones took the direct kick, firing a shot that bounced off the crossbar and down into the goal, putting the Trojans up 1-0 early.

The Flames regrouped and kept the ball on the other side of the field for most of the first half. Lodi midfielder Kelsi Meier had a few scoring chances, but had a direct kick headed out by a Trojan defender and had a shot from 20 yards out bounce off the crossbar.

Seven minutes into the second frame, Jones struck again by landing a header past Lodi goalkeeper Halle Ortiz and into the back of the net. With 14 minutes remaining in the game, Jones completed her hat trick with a shot from the left side of the field that sailed just inside the right post to give Lincoln a 3-0 lead.

“We just made mistakes in bad areas,” said Lodi head coach Tim Stutz. “Fouls that we shouldn’t be committing that give them free opportunities: a hand ball we didn’t need to do; a missed header on the second one and on the third one, we just released two people on the back post. You can’t make those mistakes and not get punished.”

With time winding off the clock, Lodi was finally able to get on the board in the 78th minute of the game. Senior defender Kortney Agdeppa sent a direct kick from her own 20-yard line that sailed all the way down to Lincoln’s 30 where Amie Gillett was waiting. Lodi’s junior midfielder got the ball and sprinted into the box for a one-on-one with Trojan goalie Emily Meerdink.

The two collided and Meerdink was sent off the field with a yellow card, while Gillett was carried off the field with an injury. Lodi was awarded a penalty kick and Agdeppa took advantage, sending a line drive that squeaked just inside the left post for the Flames’ lone goal.

Stutz said he thought his team dominated in the first half, but had trouble in the final 40 minutes mostly because of the standout play from Lincoln sweeper Alexandra Ruhl.

“She did a great job sweeping. She did everything she was supposed to do,” Stutz said of Ruhl. “Make the person uncomfortable, then back off. She played phenomenal.”

Stutz is hoping his Flames can battle back with wins over Tracy and a win against Lincoln on April 16 when the two teams meet again in Lodi to stay in playoff contention.

“We put ourselves in a hole, but we can battle back,” he said.

Coane knows it won’t be easy to sweep the Flames this season and said he expects a battle from Lodi on April 16.

“Lodi is always tough,” he said. “They always play us tough so I am sure they are going to be ready for us when we come to Lodi.”
