Local Wine Institute members hold meeting
Members of the Wine Institute's Northern Interior chapter (or District Nine) gathered at the Wine and Visitors Center on Wednesday to discuss the current state of the wine industry.
The meeting revolved around policies and procedures for preventing heat illness and the industry narrowly averting an excise tax.
Local winemaker and grower David Lucas, who is a member of the Institute, said the excise tax would have devastating consequences on California's wine trade.
"It's cleverly disguised as a nickel-a-drink," Lucas said. He went on to say that the tax would be much higher. "In reality, it would be a 640-percent increase," Lucas said, equaling out to $217 per ton of grapes, severely cutting into the winemakers' budgets.
Lucas said that members agreed they would rather see a flat tax be created rather than one that singles out any one industry.
District Nine of the Wine Institute covers wineries in Colusa, Merced, Sacramento, San Joaquin, Solano, Stanislaus, Sutter and Yolo counties. With 1,000 members, the Institute acts as an advocate on behalf of those members in the areas of legislation and regulation.
