Student redirecting fundraiser money to the Jones family
Lodi High senior Marissa Casillas, who was on Stephanie Jones' cheer squad, has decided to redirect money from a fundraiser she was already working on to the girl's family.
"They're grieving now and every little bit helps," Casillas said of her decision.
For her senior project, Casillas had joined up with Gonzales' Bridal Boutique for a prom fashion show with ticket sales to be donated to a local charity. She now wants to give the future funds to Jones' family to help pay for medical and funeral expenses.
"Every time we lose a young person due to a tragic accident, violence or illness, we also miss the potential contributions that person can make to our local community," Sandra Gonzales, owner of Gonzales' Bridal Boutique, wrote in an e-mail. "Yet through the loss comes inspiration from other teens looking to help and make a change."
The fashion show is scheduled for April 4 at the One-Eighty Teen Center, 17 W. Lockeford St. Call Gonzales' Bridal Boutique at 369-5806 for more information.
Other fundraisers for Jones' family are planned, including a band concert next Saturday at the Lodi Boys and Girls Club.
Lodi High students are also making and selling on campus homemade bracelets in Jones' favorite colors, according to Principal Bill Atterberry.
